How do you prevent bacteria growing in the ATO reservoir?

Most people block light from entering the tank to grow algae/bacteria. Others clean the ATO once a month.

Thanks. Can I just paint the outside of the tank black. I had been using a bucket but upgraded to a 10 gal aquarium and the bucket was kind of slimy on the bottom when I emptied it.

Sure. I painted mine black. I was also going to have a piece of glass cut to fit most of the top and paint it black too. I don't know what I want to do now.

Make a piece of fabric to fit the tank with elastic sawn into the seam like a shower cap. Easy on. Easy off.

Why bother trying to eliminate it? Just live with it.

Think of it as a phosphate sponge that further polishes your water.

Heck, i like Algae it has been about the only thing I am able to keep alive! LOL

Algae isn't the problem It is a slimy bacteria.
