Alkalinity

Tested my alkalinity today for first time. It was at 8.6. Is this good or where should it be? I have a 120 reef. Have problems with diatoms and now my zoos won't open up. Everything else is at 0 including phosphates. I have been using or water and still have a diatom problem. Only feed every other day. Just changed my lights to LEDS hoping that that would solve my problem but nothing.

I have snails, hermit crabs, and lots of those pesty star fish, two sea urchins and a large emerald crab. Unfortunately, can't tell how many snails or crabs, seems that they have disappeared. I do see some but not the quantity that I have purchased.
I feed them mysis shrimp, pour a small amount in and watch them go at it. I believe I now have 13 or 14, not sure cause four of them are engineer gobies and I definitely have seen three at any given time but I had four.
I have a sump with a denitrator, and a huge amount of macro. Took off the protein skimmer two days ago, didn't seem to do any good but when I get a bigger or different refugium, I will put it back in.
