    Fightin' Tang

Just added my Coral Beauty to my main tank and almost immediately, my formerly docile yellow tang started tail whipping him. Move the CB out and back in, now things seem to be calming down, but the CB is hiding behind the rocks. I'm not sure if the Tang has calmed down because the CB is hiding...

Hey, whats up with the 30 ft sponge? LOL

Last I heard, he was was waiting to buy a digital camera because he didn't want to pay $5.00 to get his pictures developed. It's a mystery....

    SOUTHDOWN

J Johnson, are you sure it was the Kohler WI Home Depot that had Southdown? I tried to get their number through information but I was told there is no store in Kohler

    Questions about Yellow Tang

At what time of day is he pale or colorless? I had the same concern until someone told me not to worry about it. At night, when the lights are out, their color fades a lot. Mine is cream colored when I come in in the morning, 15 minutes after I turn the lights on, he's a deep yellow again.

    Lionfish----Normal????????

Rob, every fish has a different personality and lions can be extremely varied. I had an antennata and a Russell's in the same tank. The antennata was just as you described, but the Russell's was as active as a damsel. He will get hungry, and when it happens, his appetite will force him to eat...

my coral beauty is getting chased by my bi color angel

Bring him back, they gave you bogus information. Angels typically don't get along with members of the same genus or species. The chasing won't stop until one of the fish is dead, unless you have a huge tank where they each can establish territory.

    Creating dsb

I have had a problem with purple algae on my sand bed. The only solution that has been posed to me is to convert my sb to a DSB. I have some SD sand coming, and my questions are: 1. Should I remove the purple algae before I add the additional sand, or just lay the new sand over the top? 2...

    help me decide,...triggers...or a reef??????

Just to clarify, you don't need to always feed "meat-eating fish" feeders. In fact, it's not reccomended in saltwater. The body chemistry of saltwater fish is different than freshwater. Putting freshwater feeders in may look cool, but in reality they offer little if any nutritious value. In...

    cycling question

It depends on how long you can tolerate the stench of the shrimp. You should be able to pull it out by now.

    SOUTHDOWN

My understanding is that they have stopped producing it. I thought I had read where the company was bought out and the decision was made to stop producing Southdown, this was back in January. For me it's become almost a phantom. I heard rumor there was some in Rochester, MN so I called and...

    TANK CYCLED NOW WHAT???

Hey Dave, I think adding the LR is a good idea. It's tough to get too much. The great thing about it is it provides the basis for all of the visible growth in your tank. Each day there is something new on mine, it's pretty cool. Make sure it's cured, or you could end up getting tossed into a...

    New Tank

Welcome aboard! Okay, a couple points: Don't go down and use sand from your local beach. It's polluted. Now you may think it's clean, but it's polluted. Try this, take a dinner plate and put a bit of water in it, then put some dirt from your yard in the H2O. Stir it up. Notice how some of...

    TANK CYCLED NOW WHAT???

You're going to be overstocked with that mix. A dwarf lion can get to 5-6 inches, that and the clowns are going to put you right on the limit, that's if you get rid of the current inhabitants. Most people reccommend anenomes for an established tank. I can tell you that I put in two anenomes in...

    What are they on about

I haven't been doing this too long, so maybe my response will sound like I'm smoking crack (which I'm not), but I think hermits are essential. They are a clean up crew that take care of extra food lying around that your fish don't eat, they trim back algae and waste and stir up the sand bed. I...

    Cycle Starts Tomorrow...

Don't cycle using Damsels, use raw shrimp from your local grocery store. A Half pound of jumbos should run you about $6.00, throw 4-5 in there, let them sit for a few days and as they break down, your cycle will start. It's cruel to make a fish live through a cycle, and expensive. Your local...

    Black Dots on Yellow Tang

I just noticed three black pepper-like dots on my Yellow Tang (purchased a week ago). Is this the start of Ich? Should I lower the salinity right now? Seems very active, no scraping and appetite is good.

    Purple Algae

I guess. It's kind of like a carpet. When I stir it up, it lifts up in sections, then eventually breaks apart. It's not slimy like the stuff you see growing on the glass, but it's not solid by any means.

    Purple or red algae

Sorry, this was mistakenly posted in the equipment forum originally. I have purple algae (red algae?) growing on my LS bed. It doesn't appear on rocks, heaters or anything, just specific spots on the sand bed. Hermits, snails or my Lawnmower Blenny don't help at all, nor do H2O changes...

I have purple algae (red algae?) growing on my LS bed. It doesn't appear on rocks, heaters or anything, just specific spots on the sand bed. Hermits, snails or my Lawnmower Blenny don't help at all, nor do H2O changes. Occassionally I will scoop it out when I get too stinking frustrated from...

QT tank with LR. Won't Cycle.

I had the exact same problem with my set up. Performing H2O changes depletes much of the bacteria in the system, so doing frequent changes delays the cycle. The other problem you may have (I know I did) is that your treatment in the QT tank "killed" your LR and the depleted bacteria colony is...
