    How many power Heads??

I have a 75 gallon as well which is just fish with about 75lbs of live rock at the moment. I have two MaxiJet 1200s (rated at 290 gph each); however, I also have two Rena XP 2 external filters on my tank, each of which also have a rating of close to 300 gph (although there is some debate how...

Anyone with experience eliminating Aiptasia anemones?

Thanks for the info jjlittle! Would I find Joes Juice at the fish store? Does it kill them right away or do you have to wait for them to croak? Also, does it come with an injector? Not sure where I'm going to find one otherwise.

Anyone with experience eliminating Aiptasia anemones?

Hi Everyone, I'm starting to see a fair number of these buggers and would like to try to get rid of them before they become too much of a problem. I've read about the injection method, and I'm wondering if anyone has tried this with success, and what to expect from it. Do they die then you...

Bugs In My Live Rock And Sand

Do a search for pods on the boards. You'll find numerous threads on the subject. Bottom line though: They are great for your tank and a sign it is doing well. There are almost certain a ton of them in there you aren't seeing.

Certain fish are getting enough food?

Hi All, I have a 75 gallon with about 70 lbs of live rock I started about 2 months ago. I've had a cleaning crew of crabs and snails in for about 6 weeks, and finally added my first fish last week--a pair of perc clowns! My question is, how can I be certain my fish are getting enough to eat? I...

    Skimmer thoughts?

I have a 75 gallon tank that has been up for a couple of months. I have about 75 lbs. of live rock, and added my first two fish last week (a pair of perc clowns) as well as about half a dozen snails and hermit crabs. I plan on phasing in a number of additional fish, as well as corals and...

What to do about funky film on my water?

Thanks for the quick replies! Sounds like I need to direct the powerheads more towards the surface for starters. Presently they are both on the back of the tank towards each side and pointing straight forward. My idea was the water disturbance would spread out from the front in all directions...

What to do about funky film on my water?

Hi Everyone, I started up a 75 gallon about 6 weeks back. I've yet to add fish due to being on vacation; however, I have added snails and several crabs. I have had about 65 lbs. of cured live rock in there for about a month and all my chemical levels have been optimal. I'm using two Rena XP...

    Food for cleaning crew

Hi everyone, Several weeks back I finished cycling my 75 gallon. I have about 65 lbs. of live rock in it, and added 5 red-legged hermits, 6 snails, and an emerald crab. I've yet to add any fish as we're going to be out of town for about a week. My question is what can I do to ensure the crew...

    Canister Filters and Media

I have two XP2s on my 75g. I'm using the bio-chem stars in both, although the rings work just as well I'm told. These build up a beneficial bacteria on them over time. Just be careful when cleaning your filter: You want to rince the rings/stars in salt water (preferably some taken from the...

WTF are these things??? Newbie Here!!!

That's a bristleworm for sure. Check out the Hitchhiker ID thread at the top of the page for more info. I was just asking about them in a thread here last night, as I'm finding them in my tank now after adding my first 50 lbs of live rock last week. If you do a search for them on the web...

    Powerhead question

I too have a 75 I set up several weeks ago. I have two Maxijet 1200s (290 gph each), plus my two Rena XP 2 canister filters (300 gph each). I'm still messing a bit with the location for them though. Having some trouble figuring out the best spot to optimize flow and not bother the substrate.

Which live rock should I choose?

You really can't go wrong with any of them. What you need to look for (regardless of the type) is surface space. The more porous the better. I'm partial to Fiji because my LFS always has a great supply of it, and I have no problem finding some great shaped rock.

    The Kids(and I)are depressed !!

Sorry to hear about your losses! Two things that stand out a little (to my fairly untrained eye). 1. 1.021 is really on the low side of the scale. It's always better to err on the higher side and keep it around 1.025ish. 2. Some might say 82 is a touch on the high side (I wouldn't), but if...

    Bristle Worm Opinions

Thanks for your input nicetry. It seems they have a very bad reputation and it seems very easy to get worked up over them even though as you say most are harmless. From what I understand there are quite a few inverts and fish out there that actual make a meal of them as well, so I'm...

    filter types

I prefer canisters over hang on the back types. I'm presently using two Rena XP 2s on my 75 gallon. It's nice having the bulk of the tank's equipment out of site under the stand, and with the Rena filters you simply flip a lever to disconnect the lines from the main canister for cleaning. Very...
