I started the same set up in a 55 a year ago. this is what i've done since.
1. canister filter, adds many more options you can not get in a HOB power filter. I just added a Rena XP 4 w/ a switching current device (huge but i got a deal on it).
2. I used dry crushed coral 40lb and 10lb super fine...
I have been running a large HOB power filter & 2 H.O.T. 250 mags w/ a skilter 400 on my 55gl FOWL,. With that set up I would get 1/4 container of skimmate every 2 weeks. 2-3 weeks ago I removed all but the skilter and added a Rena XP4 (too good a deal to pass up) and I have not gotten ANY...
Any bottom dwellers (inverts & blennies etc.) will be in danger while most swimmers should move. I would still try to remove as many animals as you can until you are done. After all, rocks slip and hands loose grip then accidents happen.
I am sorry but I must defend the purple-up. I have used B-Ionic in my 29gl. FOWL that was stocked with 30lbs. of live tonga branch for a year with little coraline spread, while my 55gl. FOWLR had 40lbs. of dry base and only 15lbs. of fiji and 2-3lbs. of tonga branch rubble and now I have 3x the...
I have a 55gl FOWL tank that I run W/O a sump. I need a new skimmer hat must be a hang-on-back style. I have used the large skilter filter that worked well but was LOUD and broke twice in less than a year. Also I use a Prism Deluxe (not Pro) on my 29gl FOWL and realy do not care for it, too...
I would have to agree with Scopas and say that this method will place the least stress on tank inhabitence. That or just add few new distractions to focus on if your not up to a teardown.
I made mine out of soft pine and used CF lights, I left the back open so heat could escape, it lasted for many years until I went to a MH pendent. MOF its in my storage shed still this day.
I bought a fission for my 29gl and even though it worked to a point it was difficult to keep it running consistantly due the slight flux in water level from evaporation and typical maintnance needs. Also micro-bubbles are pretty much always present in the tank. IMO try somthing else.
My mother bought a 5-6 inch atlantic blue tang last saturday for her reef tank. The tang was in a large tank with sparce rock or cover with a 8+ inch yellow tang, and he was a pretty blue color. Then the new girl went to net him and chased him for atleast ten min until I insisted and took over...
I can be very patiant till a degree, all I was gonna add were a few nassarius snails for poo n left overs, and a cleaner shrimp, think tang and BF have parasite?
there is alway green or red algae sheets to nibble. I feed ocean nutrition formula 2 flakes, Sfb marine variaty pack frozen, mysis, spirolena enhanced brine shrimp, and a veg based community mix that my LFS sells in bulk.
This Tank is just till income tax or possible x-mass bonus. eye ballin a 265 at LFS. 2 diff clowns are risky but after following the thread "Next Clown" I simply had too, the Maroon is sub 3/4" and the B&W is just over 3/4" so with that size and age the may work, but there is a clown free reef...
I am considering adding some inverts to FOWL tank. My set up has many caves & crevices made up of mostly non-live base rock with a small amount of live rock. Thier is no natural algae, nock on wood.
here are my tank mates
1 flame angel (med.)
1 kole tang (med.)
1 heniochus (med.)
1 red scooter...
I delt for many years with reptiles and know for a fact that individual animal temporment is the key to social interaction. As for mixing a maroon and B&W am still going to attempt it with a slightly larger B&W. I just added a good deal of rock two days ago and other fish today so no territories...
I am very interested in how this turns out. I have had a very small Maroon (app. 1") for a week and just love the B&W, it was a tuff decision that i may not have had to make!
