Should have posted it here...not reef tanks...duh!

I have been told that a good rule of thumb 1-2 snails for every 10 gal of water. I have several turbos and they love the regular "film algae". My understading of the macro algae is to remove the NitrAtes from the water. (A natural de-nitrator).

    Mag Pump?

I know this may sound like a dumb question but I have read a lot about "Mag" pumps. I hear that they are the best pump. My question is "Is Mag a brand or does it refer to being magnet driven?" if it is a brand where can you purchase them? I am still researching the best DIY sump set up for...

califishdude Be very careful with purchasing the maxi’s on ----. If it is the vender I think it is he has very bad feedback and you can find the maxi’s for less at another online retailer. Maxi's have had the best feedback from what I have read on this site.

    What will eat brissel worms?

I used to have a big problem with them as well. I was told to cut back on my feeding a little. (I guess I was over feeding). That did the trick. I went from having hundreds back down to only a few.

    10 gal. sump???

I have a 55 gal. FOWLR I am looking to make a sump. I was wondering if a 10 gal sump would be enough. I was going to use a DSB and LR for the bio filtration. I have been going back and forth between the 10 and 20 gal. (The 20 would require a little modification to my tank stand).

    Uninvited crab in live rock

I would use extreme caution in “throwing anything back in to the sea” I don’t know if you are aware of the massive problem in the Mediterranean with a macro algae bread for aquarium use “Bred for its beauty, fast growth, and tolerance for cold, the "aquarium strain" of Caulerpa taxifolia, a...

I have been toying with the idea of changing my cc substrate to a DSB, however, I live in California and have not found a non silica based sand. Does anyone know where I could find aragonite sand. I am trying to avoid the cost of using all live sand. Thanks

    Oil less Rio??

I have been doing some research into a DIY Wet Dry. I have heard a lot of bad things about Rio pumps and power heads leaking oil past the seals into the tank (sump). I just read a review on the Rio and they said that it "uses no oil..." I was wondering if they had changed their design. Has...

    ABS plumbing kills reef tank?

White PVC is available in sch. 40 as well as thin wall. I have only seen sch. 80 in dark grey. Most sch 80 PVC found in the local hardware stores was designed to be used for high pressure water. The sch. 40 PVC that I was referring to for use as electrical conduits is light grey. I am...

    ABS plumbing kills reef tank?

ABS is most commonly used for drains (or for after fixture use). The reason is that ABS is not designed to be under pressure. The max pressure it is tested for is 10’ head pressure when used in construction. It is not intended for potable use so I would be leery of using it. The grey PVC is...

    Household mold

Has any one out there had a mold problem in their home due to their tank? I have been battling mold in our apartment for several months now. The mold problem is throughout the apartment not just in the room with the tank. I am worried that when I talk to the management, they will blame the...

    Water quality for polyps?

I am thinking of adding some mushrooms or polyps to my tank. I have a 55gal. FOWLR. I have heard that they do not need perfect water conditions to thrive. I have even heard that they can help the water conditions. I am currently struggling with my nitrates (30ppm). My other conditions a...
