    What does high phosphates do?

This is taken almost strait from the book The Modern Reef Aquarium: Phosphates promote mircoalgae and hair algae and are best kept well below 1 ppm. they are fairly toxic to some inverts as well, and inhibit coral growth. I hope that helps.

    Websites for Corals?

My best guess is that the coral is a Galaxea Fascicularis or Star Coral. Of course the book that I found it gives me no info on water current information, it just says that it is difficult to keep and requires near perfect water conditions. I just went down stairs and looked over the tank before...

    Websites for Corals?

Can someone point me to websites on corals that they trust? I'm looking for info on plate Corals, and Galaxie corals. I'm one hundred % sure that I bought a plate coral from my LFS and I was told that it needs to be placed on a rock base the sandbed with low current. I found out later in an old...

    Phosphates

Over time phospates will be consumed by alage and other things in the tank but I also had that problemwith High Phospates (.5). I was told that you want to get them below .25. The way I set about that was to get some chemical phosphate sponges to set the tank level. I used PhosX but there are...

    Spiny Urchin ate snail

I really don't know if thats normal, but the spines only are dangerous if you press on the urchin hard enough to have them puncture the skin. If the spines do break the skin and break off in the wound they can cause a nasty infection I know I stepped on one once, but they are not posionous.

Mine are enginner gobies and rusty angels. But watch the gobies they will borrow and move your rock around to make nice little holes to hide in.

    filtration

I tryed CC and live sand, In just 2 weeks I had CC poking through the live sand. I only used 10 lbs of CC to coat the bottom of the tank then placed the live sand on top of it. Over all it doesn't look to bad, very natural really from what Ive seen scuba diving but I wouldn't do it again because...

    poisonous purple nudibranch?

I found this on the web : "If you use sea cucumbers make sure there is NO way one can enter into any pumps. If a cucumber gets stuck in a pump, it will potentially release extremly toxic substances into your tank. The only remedy is to start your reef tank over since no known anti-toxin exist...

    Engineer Fish?

I'm Looking for the scientific name for a fish, comminly know as the engineer fish. It is long, around 3 inchs, has a black body with white spots or stripes. It digs into the sand and creates borrows under LR. It can swim backwards (one of the only fish that I know that can) and I think that it...

    fish type question

You can get coral cats as a schooling reef fish but I was told that they can release a poison into the water when they get scared or die. I personaly will never put another damsel into my reef tank. I used to have a reef with one domino damsel and it terrorized everything. Soon I put together a...

    ammonia drop?

Did you take the water from the old setup? If you did, the water will have some bacteria in it and you shouldn't see a steep Ammiona spike or Nitrites spike. I would watch the ammiona closely and it should fall on its own even if the Nitrites don't rise quickly, your still cycling the tank...

    How much to feed

How quickly do your fish finish the food? I fell that if the fish finish eatting in a mater of minutes (like 2 or 3) then your about right with the amount of food. But if the fish are still eating after 15 min and theres bits floating in your tank then your feeding to much. If the water gets...

    poisonous purple nudibranch?

I would say watch the tank and test the water if you have an ammoina spike then he died, and change the water. Most likely the little bugger is hiding in the rock and you'll see him in a bit. Don't worry if you don't have to. I wouldn't rip apart your LR looking for him it's stressful on you and...
