how old are some of you????

Sounds like I am the yuppy in the group. I am turning 21 on August 21 and have been happily married for two years. I work and go to school and don't have any kids (Thank goodness). I am working on my Ph.D in psychology and my husband is a network administrator...Everyone I know thinks I am...

    cant even keep snails alive!

How fast is your acclimation procedure? When I bought my starfish the lfs told me to acclimate him VERY slowly. They can't take rapid changes in water quality. Snails may be the same case. I spent about two hours acclimating my starfish and he did okay. You might just be throwing them in...

    Anyone from S. California?

I'm unfortunately not, but I might be in the near future. I am applying to graduate schools in clinical psychology and both UCLA and University of Southern California are on my list. I'm curious to know where the people who post on this board live...

Fair price for a used setup????????????????

I don't know...Over $300 sounds too high to me. I bought my 75 gal tank with custom stand for $250 and the filter and lights didn't add that much to the cost...about $450 for the system. And that's a 75 gal new. I guess it depends on the supply and demand in your area. Go high and if it...

Cleaning out an old tank from the garage...

Thanks everyone for the replies. It has never been used for animals, so that isn't the problem. I think I will try to clean it out and then buy a test fish for it. I am thinking of buying some kind of lionfish for my main tank and have one talbot damsel that I really like that is docile, so...

Cleaning out an old tank from the garage...

I am thinking about taking my hubby's old freshwater tank out of the garage and cleaning it up to use as a quarantine tank if I ever need it. The problem is that we stopped keeping freshwater fish because everything we put in that tank died almost immediately. I think some kind of cleaning...

    Mean Damselfish.

As probably the only person on this board dumb enough to have a damsel only tank, I have seen all kinds. The one damsel that I am really attached to is my Talbot damsel which is bright pink with a yellow head. I have never seen them anywhere else or heard anyone mention them, so they might not...

    HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is a medicated flake food, but it is for bacterial diseases and is an antibiotic. It won't work (I don't think) on a parasitic disease. There are dosing meds that are reef safe out there, you will just have to hunt them down (I have a FOwLR and can't tell you what they are). Good luck!

    Inexpensive Fish

Thanks for all the replies. I have a few questions about your suggestions. First, my lfs only carries volitan lions...do the dwarf lions look like volitans or are they different? (saltwaterfish.com doesn't have a picture of one). Also, I have heard that it is hard for people to get lions to...

    Inexpensive Fish

Here is my question from the other post. What are good, inexpensive fish that will not be murdered by damsels? I don't really like clownfish either. Any ideas? Also, I have heard that lionfish come in a dwarf version? Is this true and what would it take to keep a dwarf lion? How large...

to decorate or not to decorate w real stuff

I recommend against it. I bought sea shells to put in mine and have regretted it ever since. All they do it collect detrius and make my tank look bad. I am trying to phase them out, but now that all my live rock and everything is in there, I can't seem to get rid of them. The one good thing...

    Lowering Ammonia

You might want to point a finger at your testing kit. My tank has been up and running since August and I always get a reading for ammonia. It has never been zero. But my fish and my starfish seem happy enough. I just stopped worrying about it (I only have four small fish and one starfish in...

    Purple Spiny Lobster ?

I guess what I really need to know is if the lobster will bother the other inhabitants of my tank and what special needs he might have (feeding, etc). I am mostly concerned with it bothering my beautiful crimson knob starfish which is the nicest thing in my aquarium (and the most expensive - he...

    Purple Spiny Lobster ?

I am getting an invert clean up crew from saltwaterfish.com and was wondering if anyone had additional information about the purple spiny lobster that they sell. I am intrigued and would like to have one, but I don't want to sacrifice the other inhabitants of my tank if it is a problem...
