What kind of macro is this?

The LFS has macro algae for sale that looks like pieces of green tissue paper. I have never seen this kind of algae in anyones tank before and was wondering what it was and if it does as good of a job as chaeto.

    Dual overflow question

Alright thanks for the input. The stand is being built in the next couple of days and after it is waterproofed I'll be building the second overflow.

    Dual overflow question

Thanks for the reply. The tank is up and running right now. I am building the new stand for it because the metal one it came with is showing a little bit of rust and I don't want it to come crashing down eventually. The hole in the tank is in the top right corner about 3 inches in and 3 inches...

    Dual overflow question

My tank is currently drilled in the back upper corner for my overflow, with a screen on a PVC elbow that allows the water to drain into my sump. This overflow is loud, mostly due to poor design since I knew nothing when I did it originally. I am going to build a new stand for the tank and that...

    180 gallon Reef tanks

If you just want zoos and shrooms I think pretty much any light will work although I'm not positive with a tank that deep. You shouldn't need metal halides though.

Is a pulse start ballast a negative? And what bulbs?

I messed up in my last post. I think my ballasts are probe start, not pulse. I know my LFS sells coralife bulbs and im pretty sure they have xm also so I'll probably get one of those. Thanks

Is a pulse start ballast a negative? And what bulbs?

I went to the LFS today and they had my ballast for sale on the clearance table. No markings were on the box to say if it was pulse or probe start, but an employee said it was pulse so I guess I am getting pulse start bulbs. Are there any brands that are only pulse start bulbs so I don't get...

Is a pulse start ballast a negative? And what bulbs?

If I buy bulbs for a probe start ballast will they work regardless of the type of ballast I have?

Is a pulse start ballast a negative? And what bulbs?

So if I take the case apart and find an ignitor it is a pulse start ballast? What does the ignitor look like? Crap I just look at the case and the screws I thought held the top of the case to the bottom actually hold internal components in place and teh case is riveted together.

Is a pulse start ballast a negative? And what bulbs?

How can you tell if a ballast is pulse start or not? I bought 2 175 watt ballasts the other week and never thought to ask the guy what kind they were.

    Stand for 29gal

OK thanks... I probably have 50-60 2x3's left over that I didn't need to re-use anywhere in the basement, so I should be able to find enough solid pieces of wood there.

    Stand for 29gal

The metal stand holding my 29 gal tank is starting to show some signs of corrosion. I have a bunch of 2x3's that I ripped out of my basement when I was reframing the walls to finish it. I should be able to use them to build a stand instead of 2x4s since it's only a 29 gal tank right?

    Berlin Air 60 Skimmer ?

I have it on my 29 Gal tank. It works ok. It will pull some crap out of the water, but can be difficult to keep working correctly. As the airstone gets covered with stuff over time you have to increase the airflow from the pump to keep it skimming. It takes fairly frequent adjustments (every...

    DIY Lumenbright Reflector

Thanks.....I have a break I can use at work to make something like these. My original plan was to just make a 3 sided reflector (like this _/ but upside down) out of some aluminum flashing, but if those aren't too difficult to make I'll try them.

    DIY Lumenbright Reflector

Have you gone through with this project yet? I just bought a couple of 175 watt industrial pendants and was going to try making my own reflectors for in a hood if I could find good plans for them.
