White substance growing a new piece of LR

Doing well, thanks. I've retired, but they asked me back to teach part time, which comes to 4 more hours teaching than I had to do when I was full time. My wife has given me "Retirement for Dummies". I'm glad to see you posting again.

White substance growing a new piece of LR

Still, post a picture so we know it isn't aptasia, which is evil!

Things like that will come, and then they'll go. They are of no consequence at all.

Chaeto Reactors compared to Algae Scrubbers

I have my algae scrubber above my sump, and it drains into the sump and gets water from there too.

150 gallon salt water coral and fish. 1st timer.

Your post's title indicates that your goal is a system with corals. Although there are some fluorescent bulbs that will suffice for coral growth, your best bet is to invest in LED or metal halide lights. Next consideration after lighting is circulation. Looking at the 120 gallon tank on...

Nitrogenous waste: all should be zero pH=8.3 salinity=1.025

    redoing 10g to salt

Good questions, but before I answer them, just a warning: you will find a 10 gallon nano a very difficult tank to maintain. Things that take days/weeks to ruin a larger tank will kill everything in such a small system in a matter of hours or a day, so you have to stay on top of the system...

    Fish Hiding

Be glad if your anemone fish picks a small area to be its territory. I have a very large ocellarus clown who has declared the entire 220 gallon tank as his territory. I am allowed to occasionally put my hand into his territory, but not always. Sometimes i get punished with a quick nip. All the...

I need recommendations for what type of fish I should get

You have gotten some good advice about fish. Before we can make any coral/invertebrate recommendations we need to know more about your setup. Lights, sump, skimmer, UV, algae scrubber, water conditions, how was the tank cycled, what are the current readings? Given this information we can be more...

    The horror

Sorry to hear that. I had the same kind of disaster after Sandy - had a generator but couldn't get enough gas to keep it going full time. I lost everything, including a 19 year old emperor angelfish and a burbonius anthias, not to mention all of my corals and inverts. I'm still rebuilding, but...

You don't have to sanitize the tank and rockwork to eliminate/control aptasia. True peppermint shrimp will eat the small polyps, but not the larger ones. There are fish that will eat the larger polyps, but it may be easier to inject them with Joe'sJouce or kalkwasser using a small syringe (Joe's...

    Need help identifying this ...

These are a major nuisance. You can control them with true peppermint shrimp (there are look-alikes out there that won't eat them) that will consume small ones, or with berghii nudibranchs (although I have never had luck with them, and they aren't cheap). The larger ones can be injected with...

    Fish in shipping...

I don't think adding Prime to the bag is a good idea - Prime lowers the oxygen level, and it is very possible that the levels are already depleted. IMHO, the key is to get the fish into fresh saltwater asap. Begin drip acclimatization right away, and take off any excess water from the bags...

    Need new water pump...

I have been using Supreme pumps for decades and they have been reliable. I always use them submerged, so noise is not an issue, but they will also run inline, but I can't attest to the noise level, or lack of it. Can you modify your setup to run submerged?

    Horn shark /bullhead&lionfish

I agree with Jay - it probably doesn't matter the order with these 2 fish.

    Any info would help.

I just remembered - take a look at the overflow boxes at glass-holes.com. Their overflow boxes sit behind the tank, our of view. I used on one a 30 gallon reef for years and it was a pleasure. You will have to drill the tank, but at the top, and their directions are very clear. Good luck.

    Choosing a Tank Size

For the past 30 years I have had relatively deep tanks (a 110 gallon display tank, and more recently a 220 gallon). In all that time I think the only time the depth was a problem was when I was setting up my aquascape. After that the only times I needed to reach near the bottom was to vacuum the...

    Need help, sick Tang

Nitrates (with an 'a') are relatively innocuous until levels rise well above 100 ppm. Nitrites (with an 'i') are toxic. Since your ammonia levels are at zero and the nitrite levels are low and falling, I would add Prime and get the fish into treatment now.

    Any info would help.

Jay is right - in a 75 gallon tank the bottom is likely to be tempered glass, which cannot be drilled. If the side panes are normal glass you could drill there, but imho it isn't worth the effort or risk. Using the 29 as a sump could be a good idea, providing that it hasn't been treated with...
