help bring my 5yr old tank back to life

I am also a member of the "can't grow chaeto no matter what I try" club. I think some people are just destined to be lifetime members of this exclusive club, and you seem to be joining. In a week or two you will receive an email with our secret handshake:D. Seriously, I cannot grow chaeto, and...

    needing some help

In my lab the first lesson I teach my students is to never trust your instrumentation, especially when you are getting results that don't make sense, as you are seeing. Hydrometers are frequently off because of air bubbles stuck to the indicator in hard-to-see places. A refractometer with ATC...

    PHOTO CONTEST!!

Neither does mine. This photo is a testament to the ability of modern dslr's to fire multiple exposures in a short period of time. The other photos in the series are a mess:D

    Salinity vs Specific Gravity

I think that wine hydrometers are calibrated in Brix units, not SG. If yours is calibrated in SG or %, so long as the range covers marine concentrations and temperatures, it should be fine.

Is a live rock tank a reef tank?

Live rock is simply a filtration tool. It can be a component of a reef or fish-only system.

What am I missing to start my tank.

I agree with dangerfish. Add the 22 lb of live rock, but add another 50 lb of nice looking dead rock at the beginning and after the cycle runs you will have 75 lb of nice live rock - enough to run any but the most overcrowded tanks.

    water quality / alternatives

Yah, bottled water is usually RO only. The salts that are left behind by reverse osmosis give the water the taste we like.

    Proper equipment sizing

Sounds like a great fish collection, and 3 reef chromis would be the icing on the cake.

    The Nitrogen Cycle

Pedantic correction: The ammonia method does not add too much ammonia, nut may add too much nitrogen to the tank, which cab be good food for algae. Other than that minor quibble, nicely done, as usual.

Fish are scratching, in a tank treated with copper!

I just tried to find Copper Power on the internet, and there isn't much out there. Apparently it is a mixture of metallic sulfates, including copper sulfate. So I'm not sure if a standard copper test kit even works for this product. I used to use cupramine and a matching test kit, but now use...

Fish are scratching, in a tank treated with copper!

UV only kills what is suspended in the water. The bacteria that are processing nitrogen waste are only on solid surfaces (glass, rocks, sand, etc.), so UV treatment doesn't affect them. Even so, you might find ich returning later since it is very difficult to do anything other than lower the...

How many things are wrong with this story?

Sad, just sad. There's nothing more to say about this comment.

Would these fish get along with each other?

As people have already said - way too much stock for a 20 gallon system, even with top notch, state of the art filtration and lots of experience (which I'm guessing you don't have, or you wouldn't be asking about this stock list.

    Fish I Have Known

I saw that people were having problems loading pictures, so I just used a link to my photography site at SmugMug. There are lots of free sites for hosting pictures on the internet that you could use the same way. I use SmugMug (and pay for it) because it has lots of flexibility and the ability...

    Inedible hair algae?

I had a severe hair algae problem, probably because I love to feed my fish:rolleyes:. I finally got it under control when I added an algae scrubber, which effectively outcompeted the rock for macroalgae growth. it still took a few months to completely eliminate the problem.

    Fish I Have Known

I will be adding photos of fish from my tank on an ongoing basis here. Enjoy.

    water quality / alternatives

Talk to the delivery guy - it may not be distilled, but DI (if used for drinking) or RO. Real distilled is very expensive.

Whats the Best DIY RO/DI to install?

Most home RODI systems recover about 10-15% of the water processed, the rest going to drainage, although some folks capture the waste and use it to water their gardens. Commercial systems, using high pressure pumps, can recover up to 90%.
