    Starting my first salt aquarium

Hi! Welcome to the site. What Flower said is 100% correct, as usual. I would add to her comments that, while the 46 bowfront tank is not considered to be a large tank, it is not very small. The idea of "bigger is better" really refers to the stability of the system. A 12 gallon tank can very...

    Another MIA :(

I just broke down my 110 gallon system after 17 years of continuous operation. I found lots of bones in the sand bed and in the w/d mixed in with the lowest level of bio-balls. I could probably have reconstructed every fish that had ever disappeared over that 17 year period.

All my Fish Died...NEW tank & need help cycling....please help!

You have ammonia in there, so your cycle will just have to run its course. I wouldn't add any life until the ammonia and nitrite levels are zero. Then add one fish at a time, with 2-4 weeks between each addition. Take your time - nothing good happens fast in a marine tank!

    Which is better?

Many years ago I had to abandon a panther to a local zoo when I moved out of town. Two years later I was back to visit. The zoo was feeding the fish whole adult rats - so you can count on needing some large tankmates for this fish.

    Which is better?

Without even knowing about your other stock, there are concerns. The panther will grow large, which means large tank and large tankmates. The maroon clown could well be considered an expensive lunch for the grouper. I vote for the foxface and the maroon clown.

    Cycle Confusion, Possible false reading

The diatom bloom indicates that your denitrification cycle has completed. My guess is that you are ready for a fish.

Any MEN out there have any trouble with SOY?

How about fat free milk?  I drink fat free Lactaid milk, and its pretty good. Lactaid milk is normal cow's milk without the lactose. It is not soy-based, so no problem with phyto-estrogens.

Sounds like bristle worms-good members of your clean up crew. To be sure, post a picture.

Any MEN out there have any trouble with SOY?

Soy does have estrogen-like compounds in it, but the concentration is far too low to affect an adult male. I would worry more about the fact that it is an incomplete protein, lacking the essential amino acid methionine. Also, you probably released more estrogen from your fat stores when you...

    Ocellarus color

I have almost convinced my wife that everybody has the bright orange kind, but we have a rare and exciting genetic mutant. Almost convinced!

Salt mix vs natural sea water

I recall seeing an article a few years that examined the quality of natural seawater, and it was not good. It seems that the collection boats do go far enough off shore to avoid the usual inshore pollutants, but the collect the water from near the boat, and there is oil and gas residue in the...

    Ocellarus color

Yeah, mine was bright orange, then began to show black spots that eventually merged.

    Ocellarus color

I picked up a small tank-bred ocellarus clown two months ago. He had bright orange and white coloration at that time. Now about 3/4 of his orange body has turned dark black, leaving only his abdomen orange. He seems very healthy, eats 3-4 times his own body weight if I let him, is hosted in a...

    quarantine tank

It sounds like your qt is cycling, so don't do anything to it. I don't have a problem when using filter material that has been stored in the sump of my dt to instantly cycle my qt, but you added live rock and sand, so who knows. I would take out the rock and sand - they just add complications...

If you do get a Niger trigger the lion may be a problem since triggers often nip at the lion's fins.

    Bad lionfish!

And...remember that a lionfish's mouth is about the same size as its body at its widest. It probably is familiar with the damsels, so it doesn't regard them as food, but any new thing in that size range will be fit-tested, and eaten if possible. We used to have a volitans that tried to eat...
