    Question on bio balls...

If you have enough ls and lr then you can start removing them slowly something like a quarter of them every couple of weeks. It wouldn't hurt to wait until you get the fuge set up either, but still remove as above.

    Stuff on water surface.

I have a simular issue in my 38 gal tank now that one of my power heads have died (lowsy Rio's.) . You may want to try adding a power heard or moving one more twards the surface. More circulation at the surface seems to get rid of the film.

    Skimmer For 46 Gallon

If you don't want to go with the sump route, a CPR backpack skimmer will work quite well for that size tank. I ran one on my 38 gal. for a while before switching to a sump based setup.

    CPR CS100 Overflow

I've had a CS90 on my 38 gal for a little over 2 years now. Never had a problem with it loosing syphon. The aqua lifter pumps are something new so i haven't seen one yet. I may try one in the near future to replace the old rio pump that i am currently running.

    need help

After the ammonia spike you will see the ammonia level drop and the nitrites rise and fall followed by a rise in the nitrate level. When the nitrates start to fall your cycle will be nearing completion. After this you can start adding your critters.

I would remove the shells and rock substraite and get the Live sand before you add your live rock and inhabitants. It's a pain to change once your tank is completely setup. I found this out the hard way. Alot of people use southdown (yardright) sand from homedepot if you can find it and then...
