    Brown flakey stuff on surface

My 10 gallon has been fishless for 2.5 weeks now b/c of ich. It has several soft corals, 12 lbs live rock, mini penguin filter, powerhead, 65 W PC lighting, etc. Lately, I've notcied two huge changes. 1. Hella more pods and weird crustacean like things all over the inside of the tank...

    ppt levels?

I don't mean to be a pain.... but could someone give me the ranges for both reef and marine? By knowing the range, this tells me how precise I must be with ppt levels as opposed to specific gravity. If it is only 34-36 than I know I should be as close as possible....but if it is 32-38....

    ppt levels?

I apologize if this has been answered before, but could someone post the critical ppt range levels for reef and marine tanks? For instance, I know for hyposalinity, 14ppt is optimal. Marine tanks: range 34-35? Reef tanks: range? I've been using a hydrometer until now, and I don't know how to...

DoubleZero, I understand clearly what you are saying. Thanks for the useful insight. I guess this thing will work afterall.....

    Refractometer calibration...

Broomer, Yes, you are right! When I look into the lens, it does say BRIX on the bottom. Good call....hopefully there is some info on the net about this. Thanks, Eric

    Refractometer calibration...

Broomer, sorry, I had one more question. So, now I understand the difference between ppt and specific gravity. What is it that refractometers measure? I read your info in the FAQs, and it says that you have to wait till the temp reaches the same as the refrac, and since you said that spec...

    Refractometer calibration...

DoubleZero, thats probably the best idea. I'll just take it to my LFS and compare different solutions using their refractometer and mine, and make my own general scale. I can't really think of any other way to approach this problem.

Razor, can I get on this newsletter of yours? And Scott, if you don't end up sending this table to Razor, can you send it to me? eric@pokerbazaar.com

    Refractometer calibration...

Broomer, When I was given the refractometer, I was told that it was used in a chem lab to measure how much solid was dissolved into a particular solution - any solid, including salt. The 0-32 is what I see when I look into the refractometer lens. There is a scale that starts on the bottom at 0...

    Refractometer calibration...

I thought that for every specific gravity reading, there was a correlating salinity reading. I mean....wouldn't a specific gravity of 1.025 equal some sort of salinity, and wouldn't this equality remain constant? Aside from that....my hydrometer reads about 1.026 on my display tank, and my...

    Refractometer calibration...

Hey all, My friend's mom is a chemist, and she was able to procure a refractometer for me. Problem is, I'm not exactley sure how to go about using it. From what I have read thus far, I dropped a couple drops of distilled water onto the prism, waited for it to reach a similar temperature, and...

    Proper skimmer??

Well, I decided to take a different route - and make my own protein skimmer. I looked at some diagrams, used a cyclone idea, but with two seperate water columns. After the silicone dries, I'll test it out and hopefully, the 25 bucks I spent will be worth all the work.

    Proper skimmer??

damn, so many decisions just for a skimmer. I just went to the LFS and they had 2 SeaClones running on different tanks, and they were collecting tons of the dark green/brown slime. And they all said that it works just fine for a 20 gallon tank. Though, 95% of the people on the board say it...

    Proper skimmer??

Thank ya'll both very much for your responses. They help me along my way. Hey Daniel, where did you go to find a Bak-Pak for under $100.00? I can't seem to find this kind of deal. The cheapest I can find is $118.00....that's only 30 less than a Remora....

    Proper skimmer??

I want a hang on skimmer. I searched more through the forums, and someone mentioned a Bak Pak for a 20 gallon. Researching through the web, the cheapest Remora I can find is 158.00. Isn't there anything out there that is less than a 100.00 but will do a decent job?

    Proper skimmer??

Ok, nevermind....this skimmer is bunk as hell. I should research a bit more before I go about asking. So after the research, I am thinking that EuroReef and Remora are the best brands for skimmers. What is the cheapest version of these out there? I'll check and check back too.

    Proper skimmer??

For my 20 gallon that will house corals and fish, will this protein skimmer be efficient enough? Seaclone Protein Skimmer from Aquarium Systems (up to 100gal) http://www.petsmart.com/global/prod...D=1081800532512 Oh, and this is the complete package, right? I don't need to buy an additional pump...

    protein skimmer

I also found it difficult to decide on what type of protein skimmer that I would need for my 20 GALLON. Though I have done somewhat of a thorough research, I can't seem to find a quality skimmer for a decent price. As Jared said, I would also be willing to pay a little more for an increase in...

    pre-transfer glass work?

Anybody with some advice? I was going to transfer the corals of my 10g into a 20g tank in the next week. I have a minipenguin filter amongst other hardware that I will be transfering as well. I have never dealt with a protein skimmer or a sump before, both of which I was hoping to...
