    The idea of cycling with a fish is the fish produces amonia for the bio filter to start...hermits dont seem to be big contributors to amonia...unless you had a ton of them... Even with fish...you need more then one to get the cycle going effectively.

    When you bleached them...did you use piping hot water? It will open the pores of the plastic and aid in the removal of the juices, etc... Is the smell of hot peppers, mild peppers or what? When you bleached them, did you use a nylon brush and scrub as well?

    If the little faucet is the only out put source for your water, then I agree with Kip, no metal. You could always run a "T" fitting with a seperate valve to supply your tank water.

    You can only learn by inquiring...and you are doing this. If you have the space, time and energy, a sump set up is probably, in my own little world anyways, the way to go. Allows for expansion, etc. I run sumps with refuges...I dont pay alot of attention to the refuges...what grows in there...
