Do a search here for red algea, I had that problem long ago, and sill do for now. It's mainly caused by topping off with tap water. You can blow the algea away and catch it in a net, then simply toss it out.

I was thinking about scrubbing the LR, but I have some pieces with very small feather dusters that I'd like to keep if possible. I'm most likely going to use the secondary tank to hold most of the LR untill I get the main one to settle.

I've done this for years, but decided to post here because I realized I didn't know WTF I was doing aside from wasting a lot of money. Anyway I'm going to basically start over possibly using some of what I have allready. This time, I'm going to stop assuming and get it right by asking questions...

Back in the day I was able to keep a juvi Clown Trigger and a juvi Niger Trigger with a Yellow Tang, Tomatoe Clown and never seen a problem untill the Clown Trigger learned how good shrimp tasted. They are the more aggressive triggers, but as long as they are fed they'll leave other fish alone.

I've heard of using cat urine because of the massive ammonia concentrated in it. I've never heard if it worked or not though.
