Tank Set Up Time To Cycle, 5+ shrimp or only 1-2?

I understand what you are saying about the ammonia and to estabilish the good bacteria. My point was (not to clear--lol) that one shrimp appeared to have the similar outcomes for two different size tanks. The 29 gallon had live sand (120g did not) and a much higher ratio of live rock than the...

    What Can I Add?

I also have traditional aquarium lighting and have coral envy. Our suncoral sits out in the open on the bottom and are open frequently when the lights are on. I'm sure for stronger lights they would close up though. I also have several mushrooms that do well and pulsing xenia. The xenia has...

Tank Set Up Time To Cycle, 5+ shrimp or only 1-2?

We cycled both our 120g and 29g with one shrimp. They both cycled in approx. the same amount of time and it went much quicker than expected. Personally I think 5-6 is overkill. Although I did get funny looks at the store when I bought one shrimp.

No idea on you PH but the tank is off to a great start! I'll be watching to see what you do with the tank. New tanks are so fun, so many possibilities.

    A few newb questions

Jstdv8 gave a great description! I used cannisters many years ago on my 65 and 45 tanks and didn't ever have any problems. I just hated cleaning them. The new cannisters do seem to be easier to clean. With my current tank, 120g, I built a DYI sump with an overflow box. I know NOTHING about...

First Tank For Newby - Red Sea Max 130D Or JBJ 28 Nao

I completely agree with Denniscoy420. You can get some great deals locally if you look around and are a little patient. Check craigslist, local reef club, or some LFS post for sale items. My tank was used, set up as freshwater. I did get a great deal even considering I had to convert. A week...

    Feather Star AKA Sea Lily

A couple of people in our local reef club had one also, they said it was rare that they would "fly" (swim), they ususally crawled or walked around the tank. Both people in the club that I talked to said they were only able to keep theirs alive about 4-6 weeks. They also said theirs were...

    Feather Star AKA Sea Lily

xcali1985---It looks good! I haven't seen ours "fly" at all. He climbs all over the tank though. Seems like it stays in one place for a couple of days, then moves. It is amazing how it looks small when it is curled up and then opens up to the size of a dinner plate! I love watching it crawl...

    Weird bubbles on my Xenia

How long did you have your xenia before they started to spread? I've had pulsing xenia in my tank about 6 weeks and they have not changed at all. They look exactly the same, at least they haven't died. I also read that if they were placed on a low spot they would climb to the top of the rock...

    Feather Star AKA Sea Lily

The LFS might be willing to take him back, but honestly I think he would do as well in my tank as theirs. We do however have a local reef club and I know one person has his own business selling/fragging corals. I think he uses a drip system in his frag tank and his personal tank, he might be...
