i am really slow...help me use the refractormeter>>>>>

You cant use tap water or RO water. It must be distilled water. You can make enough distilled water to calibrate your refractometer. Place a teakettle full of water on the stove. when the steam starts blowing, place a clean coffee mug or glass over the opening to catch the steam. When the steam...

    Hairy Algae is BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What is your lighting schedule? Do you have macroalgae in your sump? If not, then put some in there with a light over top. Algae needs two things to survive, nitrates and light. If you have macroalage in your sump, and increase lighting over it, it will starve the hair algae and the hair algae...

setting up a new tank with R/O and Tap Water?

Can you use tap water? YES Is it recomended? NO Is tap water cheaper? In the short run, YES but in the long run, NO. Eventually you will be shelling out more dollars for algae removers and phosphate removers which would have been less costly if you just used RO to begin with. So my advice is to...

    Disaster struck!!!!!!

Two heaters would not have mattered and in this instance it didnt becuase I had two in the tank at the time. The problem was that one didnt turn off which caused the water to over heat. Even with one heater, if its defective and doesnt turn off, the water is going to be overheated.

    Run Mag pump external?

I run all my pumps inside for 2 reasons. 1 it helps to quiet the motor and 2 it heps to heat the water which causes the heater to come on less often.

    Aquarium question

Unless you have seen the crack with your own eyes, I wouldnt worry. It honestly just sounds like salt is creeping up from the trim. Could it possibly be just from water dripping down the glass behind the trim from when you stick your arm in the tank for maintenance like doing water changes?

How do I clean old rocks to put in my tank?

Bleach wont hurt it. Bleach is made from saltwater and then reverts back to salt water when in breaks down. I'm serious. Dont believe me? Call Clorox and ask one of their techs.
