Considering its my first reef i think its coming along nicely. I got a job at the lfs and got that brain for 18 dollars :) There are mushrooms cultivating on small live rock on the bottom. They were free.

yes but leave filtration on. It may take a week for it to clear.....

It could be you have a very efficient clean up crew in your salt... I dont know what you have in there. Its that or you have really good filtration running. Fresh water tanks don't clean up quite so efficiently as saltwater tanks thus maybe why you are getting the blooms.

To beat Aggie yes it probably is. There must be alot of Phosphates in your tap water. You really should only use R/O water buffered with your favorite additives. It may be slightly more pricey but will save you ALOT of trouble in the long run...

Might have to do with your water level and the power head thats in it? I think they have to be fully submerged or sometimes youll get fine bubbles from them. Thats been my experience at work at least..... The sponge might help and you could really use just any sponge in there so long as water...

Your ammonia is high which is normal during a cycle. I wouldn't add anything until it comes down close to 0... The scale im thinking of is 0,.25,.5,.75 per shade of color and so on. Correct me if im wrong. I can never keep my test straight.

Yellow or Green Button Polyps, Star Polyps, or an open brain. Go with red. The brain is a little more advanced but if you feed it when it opens and give it good light it should be ok. The polyps don't require too much other than good calcium levels and some light.

When i say calcium buffer i mean calcium additive. You could potentially buffer RO water but i just use instant ocean. I don't know exactly the level that instant ocean raises the RO water to. My guess is somewhere in the 350-450 range but im not sure. I also know about the relationship...

Sure it will work for a 38. The metal halide has alot of intensity. I would suggest trying a coral at a time when you get them and see how they do. They won't just instantly die but over a couple days you may see them deteriorate or what not. Ever go to Fish World? I work there....

You could add some of the dwarf angels after the tank has been established. If you add one last then it shouldn't be a problem especially with a tank that size. Just be careful which one because some will nibble the reef stuff. I suggest a flame. Oh and you could school yellow tangs too if...

Im interested to know what the best calcium buffer out there is? Im trying to maximize the coraline algae growth and minimize green algae. Can you use carbon in the filter every now and again to help clean up the system? Thanks

The metal halide might be a little overkill but it will definitely let you keep some of the more colorful corals... On the downside you might not be able to keep mushrooms in your tank and possibly polpys but not sure on those. Mushrooms i know like the shadier places in your tank and with so...

Pistols and the goby form a pair per say. The shrimp provides a burrow and maintanence while the goby provides the eyes. The shrimp is blind. SO the pair hang out together. The only thing you need to worry about is unstable rock work as they dig.
