    Enough watts?

IMHO, you will be better off with the VHO system. I have 4 95 watt each over my 40 gal and my reef thrives. Lighting is a hot issue now. And the choices are many. It all comes down to exactly which animals you are going to try and keep. This must be your first decision. Too many times new...

    Enough watts?

Are you sure that's a 40 gal? Sounds like a 55 to me. I have a 40 and it is 36". I'm not familiar with a 48" 40 gal. At any rate, if you are planning a reef tank, i.e., corals etc., 96 watts of PC is NOT enough. It might make a nice dawn/dusk addition. But not enough to support the life and well...

    Live Sand question

Here it is: Length of your tank x width of your tank x desired depth (in inches) of your sand bed x 0.0579 = # of pounds needed Example: (My 40 gal breeder) 36 x 18 x 5" x 0.0579 = 187 (# of pounds of sand needed for a 5 inch deep sand bed. HTH Hermit

    Kalkwasser

You could do a search on Kalkwasser and get tons of good, helpful info. FWIW, I drip Kalk at night in my make up water, and still add my daily doses of C-Balance (a two part additive for alk and calcium) in the morning, along with a capful of Kent's Pro-Buffer dkh. As far as what's the best...

    Kalkwasser

Hi Adam, 1) A saturated solution of calcium hydroxide, limewater, calld by its German name, Kalkwasser. 2) Commonly used in reef tanks to supply the high demand of calcium. 3) Sorry, no easy answer. Do you have corals? Do you have a high demand in your tank for calcium? Kalkwasser does appear to...

    Wave Makers???

Indeed! ;) I have my WM set at 1 minute and 45 second interval alternating currents. I played around with it for several days to get the right "mix". Seems to be working great! What do you set yours at? I too am using an IV drip 24/7 for all evaporation. Already everything just appears to look...

    Gardening Advice?????

Thanks Steve. I thought I read somewhere that if you do it too much it could release toxins? But then again, I read so much I may have it confused  with something else. Anyone else have any information? TIA Hermit

    Gardening Advice?????

Ok. I have Caulerpa prolifera and Halimeda ("Cactus Stalk") growing rapidly in my display tank. This is what I intended and is a good thing. ;) What are your methods of pruning? I do not want to do the yank and pull method, as I have a DSB and I want not to disturb it, and cause a sea storm in...

55 gallon reef should i remove my filter

I don't believe it is the carbon by itself that can lead to nitrate build up, but the neglect of leaving the carbon in a tank without cleaning it or replacing it. So I advocate using carbon occasionally, for tank clarity and removal of organics, and for a short period of time. Also, only...

    tank setup question

A great answer Scott. I have noticed you here on this BB and would like to welcome you. Your knowledge is an asset which will be most appreciated. And welcome also to Lance! Can't add really to good advice, except to say when I started my 40 gal reef set up I went with 100% ESV oolitic sand, and...

Yes, two 95 watt VHO would give you 9.5 watts per gallon (the ole rule of thumb  ). Looks would be nice with one 50/50 and one actinic 03 bulb. HTH Hermit

    Wave Makers???

I debated and debated about which wavemaker to buy, the expensive Red Sea (or others pricey as well) or the Wave strip. Well, I got the Wave strip, and I LOVE it!! It really works well with Maxijets, as it has a soft start feature. I am not sure about Rio's. You may want to seek more info on...

whiti9, If you can get your hands on the June 2001 copy of FAMA magazine, there is an article on page 100 by Bob Fenner that showcases a 20 gallon tank. A coral reef 20 gallon tank! Check it out! It is thriving with a Millennium 2000 power filter and normal output florescent lighting. My...

55 gallon reef should i remove my filter

FWIW Dean, I have a small power filter on the back of my reef that I use basically for water movement. I also use it to run a carbon cartridge 48 hrs a week. That's all the time the carbon is really effective anyway, then it just becomes another place for nitrate accumulation, and I yank it...

Power Compacts would be a good choice for a 20 gallon. But it all really comes down to what animals you intend to keep thriving, not just keep. HTH Hermit

    anyone else having Filstar probelms?

YESSSSSSSSS! I had THREE of them, all were faulty in one way or another. I finally just got the whole $$ refunded, for that hunk of junk. I too had a fluval that was 5 years old, and I thought I was just upgrading my aging equipment. That was before I gave up my old addiction to canister...

    equipment

VHO=very high output, requires a special ballast, runs hotter than PC or NO but not as hot as MH,(especially with the electronic ballasts that are replacing the old coil and tar ballasts), usually installed in a hood or canopy with a small fan, provides twice the out put of NO's, provides the...
