500 gal reef converted to 850gal reef

Cadbury.....Heat loss is not a problem. In fact, cooling is more of a problem. I have a large attic fan in my garage that exchanges the garage air with exterior air every 30 minutes. This is to deal with humidity as well as help the chillers not work as hard. Claw..... The three main stores in...

500 gal reef converted to 850gal reef

Yae4volcom... when I planned this tank awhile back, tank access was foremost in my mind. If you look at the "back of tank" photo awhile back, you'll notice that the light hood is on a sliding rail system. I get up on the tank's platform and slide the hood out of my way. I can reach every inch of...

500 gal reef converted to 850gal reef

Ryebread... Yes, I do my own photography. I use a Sony F505 camera. I always have to take a ton of photos before I get one that I like. There's usually something wrong...too light...too dark..fish turned the wrong way....etc. The one of my powder blue above is one of my favorite ones I have ever...

500 gal reef converted to 850gal reef

Snails.... I would guess about 30 or 40. I probably should have a few more right now. I added an extra 150 lbs of rock when I made the switch which is causing a small algae bloom right now. Hopfully, it will subside soon...if not, then more snails will be added.

500 gal reef converted to 850gal reef

1Journeyman...Fish breeding...no. But, my rose aneomes do split fairly frequently. I do try to give the best locations to the best corals. An example would be the solid "blue tortusa" in the photo above. Small 1 inch frags of that (if you can find someone willing to part with it) go for $75...

500 gal reef converted to 850gal reef

Thanks everyone for the words of encouragement.... As for trace elements...I don't add any directly; but, I do feel that the dissolving reactor media ( ARM...which I go through a ton of) more than adequately replenishes any trace element usage. I have been tinkering since those photos above were...

500 gal reef converted to 850gal reef

I have a 165 gal container that I use for monthly water changes. I don't add any additives...I didn't on my old system either. I feel there is adequate trace element replenishment through my water changes and the dissolution of my reactor media...which I go through a ton of.

500 gal reef converted to 850gal reef

Oopps, missed a question... The whole concept of this system was to create exceptional depth to add realism to the aquascaping and the fishes' motion. Most of the added real estate went into open areas and not reef space. The tank does look a little empty right now... but, that will change over...

500 gal reef converted to 850gal reef

To answer a few of the questions out there... The "stand" was added on to the stand for the 500. After the 500 was down, I tore off the top and re-joisted/decked the top so that the new and old stand would be as one. The support beams (there are three main ones) are 5 1/8 X 16" X 11' Glu-lam...

500 gal reef converted to 850gal reef

As many of you know, I spent a looooong weekend two weeks ago breaking down my 500 gal reef and replacing it with an 850 gal reef. I thought I would show you a few of the highlights plus a somewhat finished aquascaping pic. The tank's new dimensions are 72W X 30H X 90D. The first pic is the new...

looking for pump recomendation, and plumbing critique

Ryan, small sumps like this tend to have problems with micro-bubbles. I like your idea of sending the skimmer effluent through the refugium to off gas the vast numbers of micro-bubbles that skimmers produce. Will the skimmer perform well having to drain with head pressure though? You'll have to...

photo of my Emperor Angel's transformation

When I set up my system, the first thing that I did was run 5 new 20 amp circuits over to the fish room area....2 1/2 for lights , 1 1/2 for chiller/heater, and one for pumps/misc. I wish I knew the secret to carpet keeping...it seems that if you can get them through the first month, then they...
