From what I've read on these boards, throwing a uncooked raw frozen shrimp in the tank is the best way to get the cycle started. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Well, finally got my LS and LR in and organized. I'm going to try to have it cycle with the LR. I saw lots of dead critters while unpacking it from my SWF order. Hopefully I'll get the sump up and running this week.

Thanks mc and reefer! My uncle's 10 gal tank is where it is now. I think it'll do fine there. I think I'll rethink about putting one in my 29 gal once its ready. It has a 3 1/2 in bed (a little over 4 in in some places).

Should have 50 lbs of LR from SWF waiting for me when I get home. Its going into a brand new empty (besides water) tank. Am I safe to just put it in and use it to kick off the cycle?

I'd love to pick up some corals, but I don't think my tank will be cycled by August. My LR and LS is coming in today, so the cylce should kick off sometime this weekend or early next week. I'll send you a message in about a month if you have anything left over.

Thanks for the reply. Its gonna be a reef tank, so I only plan on having a clown and a gobie in there. Possibly one more fish if I see a small one I really like, but no more than that. When doing a reef tank, is it better to start out with the fish or coral? Or does it not matter what gets...

What is the benefit of going with mostly base rock? I know eventually it will turn into LR, but what's the benefit upfront? Just curious since I'm looking to get a 120 gal once I move.

I have 60 lbs of LS and 50 lbs of LR coming in tomorrow. I'll also be throwing in some LS from a friends tank that's been set up for a while now.

Is there anything else I should put in it? Or just have the skimmer with some baffels and the return. I've seen some where they've just piled up some LR before the return. Is this beneficial or should I not even worry about it?

I was going to use a 10 gal sump/fuge for my 29 gal reef tank that is just starting. However, when getting ready to cut some baffels for it, I realized that it was way to small to house a fuge. So now I'm having second thoughts. What do you think I should do? Should I just put the protien...

Thanks for the feedback. In the meantime we're gonna cut back on the amount of time the lights are on it. They were on about 12 hours, but we only have LR and LS in there.

I ordered LR and LS from SWF yesterday. Hope to have it in tomorrow. Its going in a new 29 gal tank and I'm just going to through it in. I figure any die-off will kick off the cycle.
