    Gobbies

Not sure how you derive your rule of thumb. Here's mine: Take your tank size and divide by 2, that number equals the suggested inches of adult fish you can have in your tank. So in your case, you can have 25 inches of adult fish. Now I wouldn't rely on this equation exclusively. I also...

    Damsels

Chromis are great fish. Even though they're part of the Damsel family, I don't consider them damsels. They're awesome schooling fish and are extremely docile. However, I wouldn't suggest cycling with them because they aren't as hardy as Damsels.

setting up new tank, what are your experiences buying fish on line?

The only disadvantage of purchasing online is that you don't get to see the livestock before you buy it so sometimes you'll get juvenile sized livestock. Other than that, you can't beat the price of online sites and customer service of certain ones are outstanding.

    Damsels

They're all equally agressive and equally worthless IMO. Cycle with them and then return them.

    Full grown fish

There are many other sites that provide that info, however this forum doesn't allow links to them. I'm not sure why SWF doesn't include this info in their descriptions.

    Sand Bed: Deep vs Shallow

Deep sand bed would help you biologically. Shallow would help you cosmetically. I'd say go for the median. 3-5 inches.

    protein skimmer

I'd say go for the Remora. You truly pay for what you get when you buy a Remora. If you can't afford a Remora, then the Bak Pak would be a good alternative.

    Gobbies

I say get the Jawfish, there's just too much personality to pass by. 3 inches is physically adequate as my tank has proved.

    Gobbies

I have a Pearly Jaw in my tank and I only have 3 inches of sand. He does just fine and has never dug another hole since his first (I've had him for 6 months now). Now I can't say all Jawfish would be happy in 3 inches, I guess it just depends on the individual fish. BTW, I'm not breeding...

    Nano Tank

    That's what I would do.

    peppermint shrip

Peppermints eat EVERYTHING! They're pigs! :D Luckily, mine actually ate my aiptasias. When I feed my fish, they're swimming up at the waterline along with the fish. Pigs I tell you....

    pods

Also, look for them when your lights are off. Usually they are shaped like the letter 'C'. I think they look like baby shrimp. If you're considering getting a blennie or mandarin, you may want to set up a refugium. Also, before you buy the blennie or mandarin, make sure they eat other foods...

    tap water?

If you're going to use tap water, I would suggest using a product called NovAqua to treat the water. It will remove all the bad trace elements. However, it doesn't do anything for ammonia. For that, I personally suggest Chloradsorb. Don't use Amquel, it only masks the ammonia.

    question on cycle

Even though cleaner clans are fairly inexpensive, I wouldn't risk it's life in a cycling tank. Let the tank cycle on it's own. Cleaner Clams aren't as hardy as say those worthless Damsels.

    Mandarin

I'll be surprised if they live overnight. Stress and fighting and lack of pods = doom.

Can a fire shrimp regenerate a claw?

Adding traces of iodine couldn't hurt either. Iodine is needed for proper molting.

    Neon Gobies dissappeared!

Have you checked to make sure that they're not hiding very well? Neon Gobies do that quite often. It's quite possible that your Damsels may have murdered them and your clean up crew did its job. It's also possible that your anenomes could have eaten them or possibly finished the job after the...

    Dealing with the LFS

Also, if your local fish store is called '*****', don't buy any of their fish (unless you can intercept them from their supplier before they put the fish into their diseased tanks).
