Intro of LR in new tank

In my new 75g, I plan to add the LR after the RO/DI water is added, LS is in, the salt is added, and the temp is right. When do I add the first specimens? I've heard the order should be: 1) LR 2) Cleaner crew 3) Hardy Fish and Hardy inverts I know this is all do be done gradually and there are...

    Ready to Begin...again (LR question)

Excellent. Thanks. Sounds like the uncured is the way to go. My tank is glass. I posted a "Calling All Copper Expers" thread a couple of months ago about how to rid my tank of the copper (it was a pretty small amount measureable). The feedback was enough to make me realize I had to empty the...

    Ready to Begin...again (LR question)

I am discaring all old water - has traces of copper in it from my tap water top-offs (I know!). I've read that uncured helps the cycle process but have also heard that buying cured rock is much better - maybe thats just for established systems so you dont shock the bioload. I just want to...

    Ready to Begin...again (LR question)

Not sure if my long signature worked or not - so much for my bright idea. Anyhoo, here's what should be there.... ~~~~~~~~ <`)>{ OK, here's where I am: Getting ready to start over after a modestly successful 1st-year, 75gal FOWLR tank! (Let me say without this site I would’ve given up months...

    Ready to Begin...again (LR question)

Please read my detailed summation below first (from reading all the posts, I figured its a good way to get the right answers). My first question is around LR. I've read all over the differences between cured and uncured, the most obvious being price. - Which is better to start off a new tank...

    Please help! Newbie!

I just saw Nemo a few weeks ago and feared the same thing. The only thing, however, was that they really did not promote the idea of keeping fish in a tank. For anyone who saw it, one of the storylines was the idea that the fish in the tank were prisoners and had to get out. I guess I'm...

    vacuum LS?

Dzones, I am in the same situation as yourself. Started my tank based off of prior knowledge and the LSF. I really can feel for the LSF industry but there's no denying the amazing wealth of knowledge on this site. I've never felt so informed on one topic, ever. Thus, I am also scrapping my...

    #1 Must Have Book

I found this book by Robert M. Fenner, in 1998. Is this the right one? Is there a later update than 1998? I only ask since I know how much techniques and tools change quickly.

    Calling all Copper experts....

Draxx- I agree, I have already decided to try to rid it first and see what inverts I can keep in my tank. Right now I have a FOWLR and only want a few little "cleanup crew" inverts and a few other stuff. So, yes, I'll try a cleanup process as outlined by you and others first before starting...

    Calling all Copper experts....

leigh - LOL! You are all right. I've read about re-sealing tanks but even heard some people doubt that! Hate to go that far and STILL have Copper in my tank. Maybe I can sell the tank on ----. How do you "get rid of" LR in a proper way??? Is there such a thing?

    Southdown Info

Not sure if I'm posting this in the right forum, but I found some useful info on Southdown and thought I'd pass it on... 1) I've heard alot of people say they can't find it in their area. This article is a great one and even has a link to the corporate site that can probably help you to aquire...

    Calling all Copper experts....

Great feedback! Wow, I love that I can post a critical message on here and the next morning have some great insight into my problem. I was first thinking that I would try to rid it with filters, water changes, etc since I am not planning on having any elaborate inverts. But then I saw the...

    Water

JRein, Sir Tim, I agree - you can't have a successfult tank w/out this site! Nas19320 - thanks for the tip on the "purple cap". I know it says "distilled" on the front of the jug, just didnt know it was RO/DI! JRein - be sure to also add some salt to the RO and test that, too!

    Calling all Copper experts....

Thanks, Kip. That's the kind of reply I'm looking for. PS - I want to be clear that its a very small amount (hard to tell the exact number b/c I'm using color strips)

    Calling all Copper experts....

"Consensus on Copper?" When I started my tank about a year ago, I filled it with hose water. Then, for a few months did all water changes and top offs with tap water. I then discovered this site and learned about water quality, RO and RO/DI water and, hence, the dangers of Copper! Bought a...

    Water

JRein, I have direct experience with Wal-Mart water so I though I could offer some input... The Walmart by me sell 1 gallon bottled jugs of RO Water (its a white and green label and says "drinking water" but a closer look says "Reverse Osmosis"). They also sell another, purple label, that says...

    Need basic startup info

Mike, Based on the above, I wouldn't think its a good idea to just throw live sand over the coral. In fact, I've been toying with the idea of starting over with my tank (75 gal, fish only, crushed coral, live rock). It's a year old and I'm having trouble getting anything other than hardy fish...

    RO/DI Unit - Water Waste?

I've heard the RO/DI units acutally have a good amount of water waste when producing purified water. Is this true? If so, approx how much water is wasted per 1 purified gallon? Manufacturer sites do not seem to mention this.

RO Water + Crystal Sea Salt = HI PH !?!?

I am using a Dry Tab test kit. Yea, guess I should try alternating both - that would give me a more accurate read.

RO Water + Crystal Sea Salt = HI PH !?!?

Thanks. I actually do this - aerate with power heads and raise temp to 79 for 24 hours and still received the reading. Ophuira - you're the first person that's mentioned you heard of this before. This brand is what's carried at my LSF and they say its the best around. Any leads??
