    How to clean Dirty Sand?

About cucumbers...can't they eviscerate and put alot of toxin in your tank? I would be afraid to leave town in case one did so while I was away and couldn't catch it in time. Is this in fact true?

    How to clean Dirty Sand?

I have a sand-sifting star in my 90-gallon that helps keep my bed stirred. He does a good job, but there is a pretty heated debate about how they are said to eat the critters that make a live sand bed live. I have had my SSS for 3 months now and my DSB seems to be thriving. I sometimes see...

    Maintaining someone else's tank

Thanks alot Broomer for the lengthy reply. The tank I'm talking about is a 55 gallon. I will be doing everything but feeding it and doing the daily doses of chemicals in the morning. I'll be stopping at least once, maybe twice a week. That depends on what the vet decides to do with it. All...

    Maintaining someone else's tank

I'm going to be setting up and maintaining a reef tank for my vet. I was wondering if any of you have ever done this, and if so what's the ballpark charge for this kind of service? Thanks. Lance.

    Low light corals

Hi, all. I'm going to be setting up a 55-gallon tank for my vet and I have a couple of questions that will probably span a few threads. My first is on low-light corals. I know that mushrooms and polyps are low-light corals, but what are some others (if any)? Also, define low light. In a...

    GASP!!!...The dreaded popping sound!!!

I sincerely doubt that it's the snails. The popping is quite loud for one, and for another...the snail population is diminishing. I've stacked up empty shells along with some rock rubble to make an "invertebrate graveyard" that serves the purpose of a breeding ground for my pods. In all, I've...

    GASP!!!...The dreaded popping sound!!!

I'm hearing the dreaded popping sound coming from my tank. I have yet to see what could be making it, though. I know chances are good that it's a mantis, but it could be a pistol shrimp too, right? That's probably just wishful thinking, huh? It can be really loud, whatever it is. I don't...

    MY FIRST CORAL!!!

Thanks for the response, all. My ricordia (3 polyps) was attached to a LR fragment already. I wedged the rock in between some LR about half way up the tank. It's a 90 gallon with 440 watts of VHOs over it. I tried to feed frozen brine, but I don't think I did it right. None of it seemed to...

    MY FIRST CORAL!!!

I just bought my first coral!!! I got a small Ricordia for $10. I know it sounds like nuthin', but I'm excited about it. I also got 20 nassarius snails. I bugged my LFS until they finally got some. They were 1.39 ea. Not bad. I also picked up a green emerald to help with some of my algae...

    HuBu's 10 gal tank.

I graduated from UF 3 years ago. I used to go to Aquatropics then. Do you know if Matias is still running it? If so, then I would go in there knowing exactly what you want. I had some bad advice over the years from that store. They seem to be most interested in the almighty $. They're also...

    any suggestions for new coral???

What about a ricordia mushroom? They have great color and texture and are easy to care for.

    Help ID, Please!

I have this strange-looking creature in my tank. It's completely white and looks like a mini-starfish. But, it has six legs instead of five and the legs are really short. It's only about half the size of a dime. I haven't added anything to my tank in a long time, so it must have been in...

    Sand-sifting star question

My sand-sifting star has been almost solely on the glass for the past few days. Should I be concerned? Is he maybe searching for food he can't find in the sand? Suggestions?

    Icecap or Hellolights

I beg to differ, Jond. I bought a 46.5", 4-lamp VHO system from HelloLights for $260. That included the ballast, reflector, German endcaps, and 4 URI bulbs...all pre-wired. I'd say that's a great deal less than what I saw from Champion lighting. Good luck with whatever decision you make. Lance.

    Favorite Coral

What's your favorite coral or corals? I'm trying to plan ahead and decide what I might want to keep. This should give me an idea of what everyone else has luck with. Thanks. Lance.

    Polyp Corals - Category

Are polyp corals softies? Or are some softies some LPS? Or what? I ask because I sometimes see them categorized all by themselves. Thanks. Lance.
