HELP A SALT WATER NEWBIE STOCK HIS TANK (PLEASE :-)

Be careful with that platform. Your tank is going to weigh in excess of 400lbs on a small foot print. Make sure the top of that platform can support that amount of weight. It needs to be more than a sheet of plywood covered with floor boards. As for the rocks, I suggest going to a local fish...

I use Mrs. Wages as well. I add it to my top off water and have not had any issues so far. But I am no expert, so i don't know if there is a downside to using it. I have found it at Kroger with the canning products. Usually on the baking aisle.

    WHY CANT I KEEP SHRIMP???

I am not expert on shrimp, but my guess is one of your fish is killing them. 85 degrees seems a bit high for shrimp. But I am not sure it would kill them in just a couple of days.

    Easier mandarin?

If you really want a Mandarin, you may want to consider training it onto frozen food. I did it with mine and have been successful. Check this link out on how to do it. The second post explains it. http://www.marinebreeder.org/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=1217

    Starting Over :( Massive loss

I would not gut the whole tank yet. I would work on trying to keep your trigger alive. If you don't think medication will help it, do a 50% water change and start running carbon. Continue to do your regular water changes (10% weekly or 20% every other week) changing out the carbon weekly. If...

    Will a Mandarin eat...

I am no expert on Mandarins, but do have one myself. I have read that you need at least 100 lbs. of live rock in a tank that is at least a year old in order to have enough copepods to sustain a Mandarin. I have also read that even if you meet this, that Mandarins will still often starve to...

    Green Turf Algea

It could be the phosphates. I have read that they should be below 0.2 ppm in reef tanks. However, some test kits won't read that low. My API test kit won't. It goes from 0.5 to 0. I suggest you do the following if you aren't already: - Continue to remove the algae from the tank. - Make sure...

    Sump ?

I too have a 55G tank. I just built a sump for it out of a 20G long tank. Its pretty easy to do. I based mine off this article: http://www.melevsreef.com/acrylics/s...ass/index.html I measured the inside height and width of the 20G. I subtracted 1" from the height, then had a local glass shop...

    Sump ?

Yes, a sump and and over-flow box are two different things. A sump is a separate tank that shares the same water with your main tank. They are used for housing equipment like skimmers and heaters. They are also often used as refugiums, which can house live rock and macro algae that aid in...

    New guy with no clue

If you are seriously interested in keeping a mandarin, you may want to consider training it to eat frozen mysis shrimp. The following is taken from this article on breeding mandarins by Matthew L. Wittenrich: http://en.microcosmaquariumexplorer....Green_Mandarin Originally Posted by Matthew L...

Be careful with used tanks. If the previous owner ever used copper based medication (which is common in many ich medications), the tank may not be usable for invertebrates like corals and anemones. Copper can get into the silicon seals and leach back out into the water. Look for a blueish tint...

    Mandarin feeding question

Being someone that also just recently purchased a Mandarin, I can share some of the things I have found while researching them. The general rule for keeping a mandarin that is going to live off pods is to have at least 100 lbs of live rock in a tank that has been established for at least one...

What can I add to my refugium to decrease nitrates?

I too trust Spanko. I have not been a member here long, but I have read a lot of his posts and the man is very knowledgeable and seems to know what he is doing.

What can I add to my refugium to decrease nitrates?

I was in the same situation about 2 months ago. Although my setup is much smaller: 55 gal tank and a wet/dry filter converted into a sump/refugium. I have 3-4 inches of sand, a small amount live rock, and a big handful of chaeto in the fuge. My nitrates were around 15-20 ppm and would stay there...
