    Freshwater Snail Question

May I suggest Yoyo loaches? They will not outgrow your tank and they are excellent snail-exterminators. I haven't had any snail overpopulation in my tank since I got mine. And besides, they are usually only 3-4 dollars in my local fishstore, while clown loaches are easily 4 times as much.

    Quarantine tank for small tangs

I know some tangs, like f.ex. hippo tangs, need alot of swimming space even when they are small. I am hoping to set up a big saltwater tank soon, and I'm wondering if I need a quarantine tank bigger than 10 gallons for my new tang? I understand that as he/she grows bigger, a 10 gallon QT might...

    Permanent hyposalinity

Another question: Is it ok to keep the quarantine tank at hyposalinity level at all time. Or is it too hard on the new fish to get acclimated from 1.025 (fish store's salinity) to 1.009 over just a few hours? Should I raise the salinity in the quarantine tank to normal levels once I move the...

    Permanent hyposalinity

Thanks alot for the replies everybody. Is there any fish that can't handle hyposalinity at all (for the recommended 4-6 weeks)?

    Permanent hyposalinity

If I set up a fish-only tank, no live rock, no invertebrates. Is there any reason not to keep the water at hyposalinity-level (13 ppt)? Will the beneficial bacteria that break down ammonia and nitrite suffer from such a low salinity on a permanent basis?

    Refractometer vs hydrometer

I know a refractometer is more accurate, but I still have a few questions... Why is everybody using SG (specific gravity) instead of salinity, even though they are telling people to use a refractometer? The refractometer is actually measuring how much salt is in the water, not how heavy it is...

    Can you identify these pictures?

After discovering that two of the three unknown things in my tank were "pests", I found this comment (by someone explaining how to cure driftwood for a freshwater tank) extremely funny: "If it was sitting in saltwater, there is unlikely to be anything harmful left on it besides the salt. Salt...

    Can you identify these pictures?

I moved my live rock and cleaner shrimp into a 10 gallon quarantine tank since I am treating my display tank. After a few days, these things started showing up: Picture 1: Green but clear bubble-like thing to the right of the feather duster in the middle of the picture, and a small colony of...

    Is this ich?

Here are a couple of current pictures of my, for now, surviving clownfish. It's not perfect. He hangs out too far away from the sides of the tank for my macrolense to get a good picture.
