IMO, you need to be very careful with the amount of force/pressure you use even with the Kent scraper and credit cards. I've managed to scratch my acrylic with these while scraping the sides of my tank. You need a light touch, and to hit the area several times to get rid of the harder algae...

Did you get the hood from your brother too? I've got the same tank (minus the sump) as you do but it didn't come with a hood. Do you have any overheating problems because of the fact that it's acrylic (which retains heat very well) and you have a hood on top?
