    Green hair algae

The light theory is certainly pertinent. When the problem started, must admit I had been lax about changing the bulbs. I have power compacts, 300 watts total. As we know, just because the tank looks bright, the bulbs may not still be good. So I did go and change them all out. I am not always...

    Green hair algae

The tank is 8 years old and has been care-free until recently. Been struggling with hair algae for about 6 months. I've read several good posts on the subject but not getting anywhere. All levels are low but obviously there are nutrients for the algae still there. I have turned off the lights...

    Purple tang fin

My purple tang as minor erosion at the back of the doral fin. I doubt he is being picked at as he is the dominant fish in my reef tank. There are no parasites, rash, slime, etc to indicate infection. He otherwise is eating and acting fine. Water parameters are perfect across the board...

In wall tanks, just a comment

If you plan ahead, anything is possible. The drains are drilled in the bottom of the tank on each side within the "mountain" formations. The outflows enter the tank from above on each side into the moutains and then each divide into 4(total) 8 outflows drilled into the sides of the coral...

In wall tanks, just a comment

Although it takes some advanced planning when building a house or a little demolition of an existing wall, I love my 360 gallon tank in the wall viewed from both my library and living room

    Lionfish question

Love my lionfish. He(she)'s awesome. I get nervous when I'm feeding the other fish because he's pretty fast and thinks everything is for him. I quish various frozen food cubes between my fingers to thaw and distribute in front of one of the outflow tubes, which nicely disperses it for all the...

    Lion fish help

I added a voltarin lionfish to my fish only tank- beautiful. Having trouble getting him to eat. The other fish-triggers, angels, tangs, etc do great with spectrum pellets, algae sheets and Formula variety pack frozen squares. He's not interested I got some live shrimp(not brine, not sure of...

    Fish recs

Yeah, the tank was custom. It sits in the wall dividing my living room and library with builtin units surrounding on both sides The 48" height was our ******** designer's idea because the living room ceiling is 24 ft. She thought(and I eventually agreed) that we needed the extra height for...

    KH question

One thing I didn't mention which is obviously important- I have a denitrifier on the tank, fed with nitrogone. As a result, my ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels are minimal and I don't perform water changes(I know, heresy). I have an automatic top off with R/O water. Although my water...

    KH question

Thanks, I feel better. The tank is fish only with an artificial(fiberglass) reef so I don't add calcium per se. That's why I thought the sea chem buffer was a good idea to help raise and maintain the pH. I was just nervous about the KH rise way above what the Hagen manual recommended.

    KH question

I used seachem marine buffer because I thought my pH was a bit low, around 8.0(I use the Hagen tests and it is a bit difficult to read the colors) I followed the directions and indeed the pH did come up to around 8.3, but the KH went way up to around 160 mg/l, from a pre-buffering value of 120...
