I have tried to removed it with a scrubbing pad , didnt really work , removed some. It is a white "powdery"looking substance , and a razor blade would not get to it . What does the buffing consist of .I have it set up and cycling right now... Jesse

I do have a undergravel filter going now , it has about 1.5 inches of crushed colral/shells , and about half a inch on that , My last tanks I used crushed coral only and it diodnt filter quite enough... Thanks for all your help Jesse
