    wet/dry questions

I'm going to be adding a sump/refugium to my 55 gal. setup. I'm trying to decide if I should go ahead and add a bio-tower to the setup also. A bio-tower filled with bio balls basically acting like a wet/dry filter. Now I've been reading some posts saying that the wet/dry filter is going the...

    Live Sand in Denver

Does anyone know of a LFS with a tank of live sand for the purpose of selling a pound or two to seed new sand beds?

    Return from sump/refugium

Does anyone see a problem by using a power head to return water from the sump to the main tank? What about a canister filter? I'm assuming these are just different types of 'pumps'.

    Fish - Coral Disease Interactions

I'm setting up a 29 gal quarantine tank. Now, can I also use this tank to grow corals. Or are fish diseases transferable to corals? This tank would be used to place fish coming in from the fish store for a period of time before introducing them to the main tank. I know I wouldn't be able to...

    What siphon overflow is best?

I'm looking at getting a siphon overflow for a sump/refugium I want to add to my 55 gal. Are there any siphons I should look out for? Good or bad? Any horror stories? Also, I'm planning on using a 10 gal. for the sump/refugium. Is this a good size for my 55 gal?

    Problem with siphon for overflow?

It appears that for an over the tank overflow (one that's not drilled through the tank) everyone relys on a siphon. My question is what happens when the power goes out? The return pump will stop pumping from the sump/refugium to the main tank. The main tank will drain down to the level of...

    Refugium questions

I have a 55 gal. long and am thinking about adding a refugium underneath the stand. Some questions: 1. There has to be some overflow from the main tank down into the refugium. Is the only way to achieve this by drilling a hole into the glass of the aquarium? If this is the case then I may...

    powerhead for a 55

I've read that as a rule of thumb for a powerhead you want 10x water turnover for the size tank you have. (55 gallon tank would like 550 gph in turnover). Is there a rule of thumb for a maximum size powerhead in a tank? I'm thinking of adding a 295 gph powerhead for my 55 g reef tank to get...

    Old aquarium with copper?

I recently got an aquarium (for free:) ) that had previously been used as a quarantine tank and had been exposed to medications containing copper. I'm going under the assumtion that the glass and silicone seams do not absorb copper at all, but I thought I might as well post this just in case...

    Falco Hawkfish in Denver

O.K. I was at a local fish store today and I guess that the Falco Hawkfish is also called a Spotted Hawkfish. On top of that the fish store was selling them for $30. I overestimated what I thought the little guy was worth. So would anyone like him for $20?

    Water change with different salt?

Just a little advice.....I went to both ***** and Petsmart last night to get salt. Instant Ocean at ***** was $16.99 for the 25 gallon box. Petsmart had a 50 gallon Instant Ocean bag for $16.99. Twice as much for the same price at Petsmart! This is in the Denver Metro area.

    Falco Hawkfish in Denver

Actually, Great Barrier Reef is on Oxford Ave at Sante Fe. They advertise themselves as the largest fish store in Denver. I'm going to try to check them out this weekend. I don't really ever buy anything but I really like to look at the animals. Where exactly is Liquid Kingdom? I'd like to...

    Falco Hawkfish in Denver

I'm relatively new to the hobby but have been trying to find a decent store here in Denver. I'm in the Westminster area and all the lfs's in that area aren't very good. Extremely poor service, dead fish in all the tanks....small dark, crowded, hole in the wall stores. I probably shouldn't...
