    Preventing a flood

Squidd, Great responses! This is exactly what I've been trying to figure out. I like you thoughts on the float switch cutting power to the return pump and ATO if the water level gets too low in the sump. What would be really nice is if an audible beep/alarm would also sound to let me know...

    Preventing a flood

Squidd, That's exactly what I am trying to figure out - how to override the ATO so that the sump doesn't refill and turn the return pump on. I had already planned on installing a float switch in the pump. Do you have an idea on how to override the ATO? Thanks, Miles

    Preventing a flood

I'm planning the setup of a new tank and I'm trying to figure out how do I prevent the tank from overflowing if the internal overflow get clogged? Since I plan on having an auto-topoff system in the sump, if something goes wrong with the internal overflow (like something clogging it), the...

    2 Aqua Clear 350 skimmers for sale,MAG 9.5 pump

Camaleon, I just broke down my 29g reef tank and I am in the process of setting up a 70g but, I'm just in the planning/gathering equipment phase and it will be a while before it's up and running. It seems as though you need the skimmer for tanks that are currently running so, I am willing to...

closed loop for my 240; will this work?

You could drill 3 holes in the bottom of the tank and insert pvc pipes with elbows. On the end of one, put a bulkhead screen to serve as your drain/overflow and the other two can serve as your returns. You can hide these pipes with LR. I saw this done on a vendors website. I don't think links...

Are these still for sale? I am really interested in them. Since these are rated for tanks 100 and above, do you think this skimmer will be too much for a 70g? If you could also send pics, that would be great. Thanks, Miles

Tank crash - I need advice!

Chris, thanks for the reply. I already have the 70g but it will be a couple months before its ready - I have to get it drilled, build the stand, etc.. I was hoping to get the 70g started with the sand and lr from the 29g that crashed. Just curious, why should I get rid of the sand and LR since...

Tank crash - I need advice!

My 29g reef tank crashed (lost everything except some crabs) and I need some advice. I am in the planning stages of setting up my 70g and I'm wondering what I should do with the sand, live rock, and refugium/mud filter in the meantime. I need to tear down the 29g (wife wants to turn it into a...

    Blood Shrimp = Thumbs Down.

My results have been mixed. The first blood/fire shrimp that I had was great! He was very social, always out in the open and would eat from my hand.:D The one I have now is smaller and doesn't come out much. I have been thinking about adding another - maybe then it will be less shy. Miles

broomer5, they are on a timer. The actinics are on for 10hrs a day and the daylight bulbs for 8hrs a day. Miles

    When bulbs go bad...

This may seem like a stupid question but: How can you tell when it's time to change the light bulbs? How can you tell when the spectrum in the bulbs may be off? The reason I ask is that my bta hasn't extended it's tentacles in weeks and it generally just doesn't look as healthy as it used to...

    Fascinating discovery

Thank you also Wrassecal! ;) I posted the above reply before I say your post. Btw, I won't add another star or harlequin shrimp to eat the asterina star. I think its kind of cool! I may feel differently though if they start to rapidly reproduce and take over the tank! I have been thinking...
