Submersibles add heat to the water. Externals can be noisy. If you want submersible go with Mag9 If you want external...go with Iwaki 30RLT or Genx 30PCX

I would use the Weldon3 and then a bead of weldon16, just to be on the safe side. As for the sump, try to isolate the skimmer area as much as possible, so you skim efficiently. I wouldn't slow down the refugium flow too much...

thanks, I'm using Tygon tubing and it doesn't seem to sit still on the check valve...its one of those that the tubing just slips onto. I need something thats got a comp or par grip fitting. Just curious if anyone else changed out their check valves for a better one.
