Macroalgae & actinic lighting in refugium

Quick question, I am setting up a 10 gal refugium under my main tank, I will be running the lights (9w PC Coralife mini-aqualight) in a reverse cycle from the DT (fuge light goes on at night) my question is this... Since the light will be on at night I'd rather run a blue light than a daylight...

    Hog Snapper ID...HELP!

Hey there, I need your help ID'ing this fish. The LFS has it labeled as a "Red Hog Snapper" (of course they had NO info on scientific name, origin or anything else to go on....typical!) It's pretty amazing, he changes color from white to red constantly, truly stunning. I've been searching the...

Biocube29 water volume including LR & LS ???

Question: Does anyone know of a volume calculator that takes into account the water displaced by Live Rock & Sand in a tank? The Deets: I'm going to fill my BC29 using seawater (from LFS) but I'd like to take the right number of 5gal jugs to avoid multiple trips. Tank Size 29 gallons 20lbs of LR...

What have you kept using stock lights in Biocube 30 ? Pics?

Thanks Meowzer, I thought that tip about the deep water acros was pretty interesting too. I suppose that since they are deep water species their lighting needs can be met under the weaker lighting, I've already added that to the livestock list ;). Overall I think I'm sold on using a skimmer, I...

What have you kept using stock lights in Biocube 30 ? Pics?

For anyone interested. I had written Oceanic Systems/Coralife a few days ago regarding what kinds of corals could be kept in a BC29. I must say I've always had great responses from them whenever I've had issues with my Coralife lights or questions about their products. Below is the detailed...

What have you kept using stock lights in Biocube 30 ? Pics?

Thanks for the nice breakdown on the skimmers! The airstone in the Biocube was also putting me off. I may go with the Aquaticlife too but I really want to look into how to best remove the false bottom. I just dont want to crack a brand new tank, but guess It'll have to be done. Is the media tray...

What have you kept using stock lights in Biocube 30 ? Pics?

Amen brotha! Lots of questions, not enough answers! Mine is also still in the box and I'm also getting everything together to set it up all at once. I hope to have it up and cycling in about 2 weeks. Can't wait to get it set up. SKIMMER I've also been debating wether or not to use a skimmer. The...

What have you kept using stock lights in Biocube 30 ? Pics?

Hi all, I'm setting up a 30gal Biocube and will be running the stock lights. I plan on keeping fish, LR/LS and some mushrooms, rics and softies. I know the rage is to mod the hell out of BC's (I may upgrade to LED's at some point down the road but for now I'm only modding the back as a fuge, and...

Fiji Mudor Reef Muck in a BioCube refugium?

Anyone out there ever put Fiji Mud or similar reef muck in the bottom of a biocube refugium? I've heard arguments about not adding live sand to the rear fuge b/c of possible lack of flow & nitrogen build up. But I'm thinking the critters in reef muck may help break down the nitrogen and may help...

Fuge Setup in back of Oceanic Biocube 29 - Any ideas?

Thanks man, yeah I'm doing a 2" sand bed in mine, I'm always wary about going deeper than that. Its worked fine in all my other tanks so why mess with a good thing. I'll probably put about 30lbs of live rock from a local guy who does aquacultured LR in the Fl Keys (live rock USA). I have his...

Fuge Setup in back of Oceanic Biocube 29 - Any ideas?

Thanks Sprieto, He's got a pretty amazing tank. Theres a lot of "less than useful" information to wade through on the boards regarding Biocubes, thanks for the directions.

Fuge Setup in back of Oceanic Biocube 29 - Any ideas?

Hey guys, I'm getting a Biocube 29 in my baby boys nursery and wanted to see if anyone out there had any experience (or luck) with setting up the back of the cube as a fuge. I've heard its possible and a good alternative to trickle filtration with bio-balls & filter media. I'm going for as...

Corlaife Aqualight - flickering issue, can I fix it?

@ Slice - I replace my lamps about every 6-8mo. At this moment my current tubes are about 8 months old. (2 18w 50/50's) so I'm swapping them out next week for some fresh ones. But I was having this issue even when I installed new lamps so I know its the unit. A few months ago I ended up writing...

Corlaife Aqualight - flickering issue, can I fix it?

lol, yup, Captain & Club, splash of Coke and a lime....thats the stuff! The Cap'n makes it happen! Agreed, its better to save up and get the next step up form el cheapo and it will last you a lot longer. Not just in reefing, also goes for most things in life.
