those in an apartment (upper floor)???

I would do what Jastim suggests. Talk to the maintaince people, they more than anybody now about the building and it's structural integrity. "Captain, the Structural Integrity is collapsing, where going to fly the Enterprise apart at the seams". Sorry I couldn't resist. Talk with your...

Detailed DIY Sump/Refugium and possible tutorial!

I too am in the same predicament. I would do a Sump/Refugium..... and yeah I have researched this site, extensively.... and sometimes things seem a bit hazy and everyone does them differently. It's one of the reasons why I haven't made any purchases yet, I want to have a good SWA, and not on...

    Lighting and hoods....

Thanks for the input. I was unsure if I had too much of too little. I did find a canopy at a LFS that would work, it was their display tank, and I did find a light fixture, a Hamilton with 2 atinics and 2 MH, 2 fans, and a acrylic piece under the bulbs to prevent the bulbs from getting...

    Quarantines???..what they do...

So I have to say this because some people are confusing us newbies..... "Have a qt tank available at all times. The reason for a qt tank isn't for an ich outbreak, but that's a good reason. It's used as a holding tank for new fish." A QT is not neccesary but an option for Acclimating your fish...

    Quarantines???..what they do...

are you saying to QT and wait 3 weeks before adding the fish to the tank, and NOT using the acclimation procedures that swf.com has set out?

    Acclimation / QT?????

What is the difference between QT and Acclimation? Are they the same thing, just different methods? What livestock would you QT and what livestock gets acclimated? I had to ask, because I have been reading a lot of threads, and someone says they get a fish, and in one thread someone says to QT...

Good Luck Hafen. I hope that this gets solved to your satisfaction. PETA will help and so should the BBB too.

    Lighting and hoods....

I'm a newbie, I'm not an Electrician either, or woodcraftsman. I don't have a tank yet, but it is going to be a 90 gallan rectangler, 48L X 18W X 24 T. Still trying to figure out my lighting requirements. This is going to be a reef tank, eventually after about 6 months or more. I was thinking...

ok - i'm ready to set it up! i think...

I'm suprised nobody responded to your thread. Which sucks cause it would have helped me out. I haven't started my tank yet, still in research phase. The equipment I do have picked out to buy is pretty similar to yours, with the exception of I have the lights picked out, and I have 2...

Must have had "SUCKER" on my forehead!!!

I don't know about anybody else, but I constantly feel, as a consumer, that stores and companies are constantly taking advantage of us, and that the only thing they are concerned about is the money they make. Hafen, I would also make a complaint to the BBB. More and more people have been doing...

    New Swa Hobbyist

I should kind of take it back, so not offend people who probably have really decent FWA's. Just have probably only seen one or two in my time. who knows, i might find a few things in the FWA that I like and start one of those too. Believe me, I am doing lot's of research. Tons of research...

    the fish I want.....

I've checked them, except Beyond the Sea. I love the Issaquah one. It was awesome, I felt that part of my research was going to an LFS, seeing everything that they have available, and asking questions. Though I haven't had to, because I've been listening in on conversations. The employees...

    New tank

    1. Don't do anything more to your tank. 2. Seek advice from some of the people on here, a lot of them were where you are at, and have been doing this for a long time. Nothing better than getting advice from people who do this and have experience. 3. Get a FEW books, not just one. You will...

    inhabitants of a 29g

Since reefer already asked about what type of set up..... here's another one to ponder. what type of coral are you putting in your tank??????? Just asking, considering that all corals are different and have different needs.

    the fish I want.....

First, I have to disagree with you, Sweetdawn. Yes, the money is important to starting and caring for a SWA. But I don't think that it is the most important. Patience, some level of intellegence, love, affection and care in your heart, and a sense of wonderment, awe, inspiration and the need...

    New Swa Hobbyist

Very rarely do I see a FWA that I like and is done decent. One reason I am doing this is because I have always wanted an aquarium. Regardless of which one. But now as I am over my 30's, SWA's just look so much better. And well the work required, can be very rewarding too.

    New Swa Hobbyist

Damn, I just moved from Phoenix to Seattle 6 months ago. I haven't yet to meet anyone in Seattle who is an SWAist. Now I can tell all those people to go frag themselves, who have told me it's stupid to start a SWA, and I should do a FWA. I HATE FWA. They just look so fake, especially the crap...

Thanks dude. I am still in the research phase, internet, message boards, books, bought my first one "The Concientious Marine Aquarist", awesome book. getting a few more in a few days. and I keep looking at what I am going to need, what it does, how to maintain the tank itself, and the...
