So the gunk actually gets caught on the sides of the foam tube, rather than in the cup?

It is new and the tank has just cycled. Maybe part of the problem is that I'm not sure how they are supposed to work. Should the foam just barely fill the tube leading to the cup? It seems like if the foam is at the top of the tube, the cup has no choice but to fill up with water.

I'm having trouble getting the air intake set correctly. I jump from no foam to and a million little tank bubbles to the cup overflowing with water. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe I should have added this... When I put in the shrimp, there was no live rock, sand, or fish. I didn't understand that the bacteria that eat ammonia had to come from "somewhere." I added live rock and within about 2 days the ammonia was gone, and the trites and trates were off the chart...
