    gas exchange

Is it necessary/preferable to have some openings in the top of the tank so there can be some gas exchange? A lot of people suggest using eggcrate, but I have found it to be a little difficult to cut. You have to cut all around the back where the skimmer, filter, heater, etc are. Does anyone have...

That is extremely comforting to know.

Does this sound like a good deal?

Complete 220W PC setup, cooling fan, seperate on/off for 2 sets of 2 21" lights, new bulbs: 2 55W 10000K and 2 actinic for $100? That would be enough for some anemone and maybe SPS in a standard 55, right?

Should/can actinics be left on at night?

    Sick Percula???

I did not know that about the brine shrimp. I will definitely keep an eye on her, cross my fingers, and hope that it's nothing.

    Sick Percula???

I have a mated pair of perculas. I have had them for two weeks. The tank has been cycled for 3 weeks or so. 55 Gal., 10 lbs live rock, 60 lbs base rock. Ammonia 0, Nitrates 10, nitrites 0, SG: 1.021. The larger of the two perculas has gotten exceptionally lethargic over the last 2-3 days. He has...

    Strange Percula Behavior

That's good to know... I wasn't sure if they were having a problem or something. I have heard they scratch if they get ick so I though that may have something to do with it... Good news is always welcome.

    Strange Percula Behavior

I have a mated pair in a 55 gal with 3 turbo snails, 3 blue leg hermits and 1 emerald crab. The Perculas have been in for about a week and seem really happy. However, just tonight I saw both of them periodically kind of swim on their side and shake (looked like they were having a seizure). Very...

    Percula Clown feeding

You mean like frozen brine shrimp? I have heard that they make a HUGE mess, and I would think that much waste in a tank would be really bad for it.

    Percula Clown feeding

I have a mated pair of Perculas and I am wondering how much food they need. I am currently feeding them flake food. The problem is that they don't see all of it when it falls so there's a good bit of old food on the bottom of the tank. I know this can be a potential ammonia hazard, so I'm trying...

Set it so the bubbles are just barely at the bottom of the bubble column??

    Advice on Seaclone 150

I see... so when adjusted properly, the bubble line should be somewhere around the middle of the cup?

So the gunk actually gets caught on the sides of the foam tube, rather than in the cup?

    Advice on Seaclone 150

It is new and the tank has just cycled. Maybe part of the problem is that I'm not sure how they are supposed to work. Should the foam just barely fill the tube leading to the cup? It seems like if the foam is at the top of the tube, the cup has no choice but to fill up with water.

    Advice on Seaclone 150

I'm having trouble getting the air intake set correctly. I jump from no foam to and a million little tank bubbles to the cup overflowing with water. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    cycle stalled?

Maybe I should have added this... When I put in the shrimp, there was no live rock, sand, or fish. I didn't understand that the bacteria that eat ammonia had to come from "somewhere." I added live rock and within about 2 days the ammonia was gone, and the trites and trates were off the chart...

    cycle stalled?

I began my cycle about 3 weeks ago with a raw piece of shrimp. The ammonia spiked almost immediately (2-3 days) and was up over 4. Then, my nitrates and nitrites went up simultaneously (nitrites - 5.0, nitrates - 20-40). Shortly thereafter, the ammonia went down to 0. The levels have remained...
