    My 55 gallon adventure

Update: I haven't lost a single fish. Everyone is thriving except for zoas. They are the only coral that have given me issues thus far. This hobby is awesome. I am awesome.

    My 55 gallon adventure

Update: I have had two heater fail me. Luckily, I had a semi-broken one that stay on 81F no matter what setting it's on. I discovered the issue when I woke up at 2:30 AM to find a snail trying to get down my 1 inch PVC overflow pipe. As I was getting him out, I realized the water temp was...

Some more pics: I added the Phoenix 14K MH 250 watt light, and I LOVE IT! Red Hot Chilli Pepper posing like a BAWS. Frogspawn Power Supply is drilled into the stand. I have a white flourescent light ready to go when I am working in the stand. It rests between the bed and the stand: I am...

    My 55 gallon adventure

Thanks for all the information rlablan, I truly appreciate it. Holy hell, where to start? I will most likely attempt the side cuttaway method of placing a larger sump tank into the stand, but for now, I'm sticking with what I have. I have a section, albeit a very small section, for a fuge...

    My 55 gallon adventure

The 10 gallon sump is completely functional. I am considering upgrading to a 180 gallon tank sometime in the not so distant future.

Still working on how in the hell I am going to fit a bigger sump under my tank.

    My 55 gallon adventure

I notice my lights allow my LPS to thrive, but zoas are having a much harder time withstanding the intensity even though they are at the bottom of the tank.

    My 55 gallon adventure

I made a 10 gallon sump yesterday as a backup plan. It was an utter disaster with the silicone getting EVERYWHERE. LOL. I made a hell of a mess, and I made many mistakes. However, cutting my own glass was rather easy! I'll consider it a practice run. Now I know what I am doing and the next...

    My 55 gallon adventure

I was thinking the same thing. Honestly, I don't know if I am really going through with a rubbermaid sump. I am reading about so many horror stories. :(

    My 55 gallon adventure

Thar she is! I just hope I haven't made a mistake with the selection of this supposedly "unbreakable" rubber tote for a 31 gallon sump. If anyone knows of this specific product causing any ill effects in their aquarium, let me know! As you can see, the rubber tote is REALLY braced by the...

    My 55 gallon adventure

I finally managed to fit a 31 gallon "Rugged Tote" container under the tank. It took some convincing, but now it is in place. The only thing I am concerned with is the possibility of it leaching chemicals into my water.

    My 55 gallon adventure

I purchased a 20 gallon long and I made all the measurements, but I didn't account for having to actually push the 20L under the stand to make it fit. Long story short, I don't think I can make it fit. I REALLY want to use the 20 long as a sump. I am going to get creative here and consider...

All my new fish keep dieing please help

Nitrates are 160. No skimmer. No clean up crew. I wonder why things are dieing. SG is specific gravity. You use a refractometer.

    My 55 gallon adventure

Going to build the sump this weekend and hopefully have everything running by then. I have 2 questions. Should I build another overflow out of another 1" PVC pipe in case the other one gets clogged ? What pump should I use? I was thinking mag7 or mag 12. If 1" PVC is roughly 375 GPH, then two...

    My 55 gallon adventure

UPDATE: I placed the overflow in the tank and tested it's functionality. I did a water change with it, so that was rather fun. Here you can see the dinged up PVC behind the rock. The corals are coming back to life after being blasted by the MH. My Six Line Wrasse AKA Skittle, AKA Six Shooter...

    My 55 gallon adventure

As I am progressing on this hobby that is, in essence balancing a delicate marine ecosystem, I am beginning to understand the value of this balance. Too much food equates to too much waste. Too much light equates to my corals bleaching and undesirable growths in the aquarium. Learning what...

    My 55 gallon adventure

Thanks! The lights have been off and no feeding for a few days. Got it. I think my 2 250 watt MH are a bit much. I'm going to decrease their time to 2 hours when I turn the lights back on and run my t5 actinic blue lights the rest of the time.
