I would definately paint the back of the tank black if you can, because if any saltwater gets between the background and the glass it looks crappy :)

have you considered running a diatom filter? I hear vortex is really good, but I haven't tried mine yet

turkey basters are a lifesaver! Mine came in really handy for even getting sand out of crevices in my live rock...
