    Blue Wave Ballasts

My wife and I have a 90 reef running 2 HQI 250's powered by a Blue Wave 7. That's the magnetic pulse start dual unit. It's been up and running since Feb, so about 8 months. I handle all the mechanicals of the tank, but unfortunitly I have been deployed to Iraq since March and I don't come...

    Timed outlets

Does anyone know if they make a unit like a lawn sprinkler controller? So that you can plug in multiple items and control the on / off cycle of each plug? The only ones I can find have a single timer for 1 or two plugs with the same number of "night time" plugs running the opposit times. So...

    Lighting timers?

I got one of the corallife digital 4 plug day/night units. It was defective (the timer portion doesn't work). The LFS said that's the second in a row to be defective. So, they may be having soem QC problems with these units.

    glass/acrylic together?

I was thinking of changing the baffles on my sump and I can't take the unit out from under my tank because of it's size. I was thinking of making a 3 sided box, then adding a center panel to it raised off the floor. So in effect the three baffles contained in a box. Then inserting the whole...

Help me with my lighting choice

I'm assuming standard 38g which is 36"x12". Sounds to me like you want a FOWLR with the option of adding some (beginner) corals in the future. Really, both MH and T5 are overkill. You could be quite sucessful with PC or even VHO. Under the PC's you can keep the LR fine, and even have soft...

    MH vs LED

It would actually be a fairly simple experiment to do a side by side of a solaris and a comparable MH / actinic setup. Light is measurable. We know what works. The "technical specifications" on the solaris site are much to general and non-scientific. This leads me to believe that they are...

TOP 5-7 Tests needed for REEF TANK !!

I guess it depends on your evaporation rate. My tank can lose more than .001 in a week. So I often have to add salt when I top off. Whatever works, and as you said, to each his own.

TOP 5-7 Tests needed for REEF TANK !!

A lot of this depends on your live stock list and bioload. If your tank is a FOWLR with shroom and soft corals then Ca isn't as important as is a heavily populated SPS tank. The question shouldn't be what do you test for, but why do you test? Ammonia - (0.0) Once the nitrogen cycle has...

    alkalinity question...

The other factor in this equation is pH. Magnesium set the relationship between the alk and Ca. Alk and Ca set the pH. If your magnesium is right, this allows your alk and Ca to be right which puts your pH where it should be. This, of course, is a very simplified explanation. Actual water...

    alkalinity question...

What are the rest of your water parameters? Looking at only one result, in a vaccum, leads to chasing numbers. I'd check magnesium, if it's low bring it up. If it's high water change till it's right (test your change water before you add it). Once your magnesium is set right then recheck...

How can you tell its time get get new lights

You need an instrument that will measure the Lumens the lamp is putting out as well as the light spectrum (as a bulb ages it becomes colder turning bluer). Can't atm remember the exact name of the instrument. Anyway, it's cheaper to just replace on a 6/12 month cycle.

    Chiller req's

Yesterday the local temp got to 80ish, my tank overnight with all the lights off never dropped below 83 So I'm going to be buying a chiller. I know nothing about them so I'm looking for recommendations for type, style brand etc.. Tank is a 90 with a 25 sump/refugium. mag 1800 for circulation...
