    lion fish

honestly i wouldnt put any aggressive fish at all in a 30. With that size aquarium you could create a really nice reef set up. Considering how limited for space you would be, and how few fish you could have, i believe you would be much happier with a reef.

    compatible?

As usual i agree with grouperhead and pufferlover. Since the lion and frogfish swallow their prey whole, and don't leave too many scraps, you will need to feed the star. Offer food by placing it on or near his tube feet. I give my red general star a live mussel once every week or so as well.

    acropora bleaching

i have had this acropora in my reef for about 9 months. This weekend, the temperature of the reef dropped about 3 degrees probably rapidly enough to damage this coral. none of my other corals seem affected by it. I changed my metal halide bulbs about 3 months ago, so i doubt deteriorating...

    Frogfish

i agree with grouperhead about them not going after hermits and snails. As a precaution you may want to start with a small number of hermits. I wouldn't worry about the snails as much. My main concern about the hermits is they may pick at the skin of the frogfish mistaking it for a tasty bit...

    rescued porc

I was visiting an lfs today, and overheard employees trying to decide what to do with a porcupine puffer who came in with ick. Instead of setting up an independant tank and attempting to treat it, (the available tanks they have share water with other tanks) they were going to put it in the...

Feeding aggressives (food type and interval)?

IMO the humu trigger will not work in this set up. Eventually he will go after the valintini puffer, and may pick at the lion given such close quarters. I hate to sound discouraging, but a 65g is a little small for the trigger. You still have lots of other options as far as a suitable...

    Angler questions

Try doing a search on a service such as yahoo under Antennarius maculatus. You should find plenty of info on them that way. The only thing i can tell you is real basic. They grow up to 6 inches. so any other fish must be big enough not to be swallowed. Any thin bodied fish 8 inches or less...

    lil critters

as far as sand sifters go, i would recommend a cucumber, and a tiger stripe sand sifting starfish. There are several species of shrimp and crabs that are sold as sand sifters. these will dig deep burrows in the sand bed. i would not add these because they are amazing excavationists and may...

Anyone have info on Harlequin lobster???

can't say i've heard of a harlequin lobster either. if it has purplish spots on a cream white body with big flat claws it would be a harlequin shrimp. These guys are really neat looking but will usually only eat starfish. I wouldn't consider them reef safe by any means.

    tankmates for dogface?

Grouperhead: i may drop you a line about that site. There is a new lfs that opened up about a month ago in my area that i try to give as much buisness to as i can. (it's got to be rough opening up a store with that much overhead) plus they are one of the only stores in my area who are...

    Angler questions

one more thing... due to their sedentary lifestyle, yeah a 55g will provide more than enough space.

    Angler questions

If you can get me the latin name for the individuals you have at your lfs, i can probably be of more help. Right now i can get you some general info about anglerfish (also called frogfish) of the family Antennariidae. As you know these fish will take up their niche on the aquarium floor and...

    harlequin tusk

If you do decide to go with a tusk, IMO it is worth the extra money to get one from australia. the colors are a little better plus they are much hardier than their indonesian counterparts.

    New to hobby- fish types?

Congratulations on starting up your marine tank! The only problem with triggers in a 65g, is they will really limit what other species you can keep with them. Some possible trigger species to look into are niger, humu, rectangular, pink tail, and blue jaw. I would avoid clowns, queens, and...

    tankmates for dogface?

I picked up the aust. harlequin tusk this weekend. he ate a few ghost shrimp within an hour of being placed into the quarintine tank so i'll take that as a sign of good health. As far as the eel goes, i'm leaning toward the goldentail but want to look into a few other species first...

    porcupine puffer

I have a few fighting conchs (Srombus alatus) in with my dogface. They have worked out great so far. The dogface leaves them alone, and they plow around half buried in the sand while sucking up detritus. So far they have been a great sand sifter/clean up for my FOLR tank.

    More New Puff's For Me!

hey pufferlover, i was checking a few LFS for stuff i "just can't live without" and one of them had 3 unusual freshwater puffers. They were 4 or 5 inches long, mottled brown and had a triangular shape. i think they were called arrowhead puffers. I was just wondering if you had seen these...

How do i frag a toad stool coral?

what happened with NM's toadstool also happend to mine several months ago. The budding is doing really well and is almost 2 inches tall. The procedure for propogating toadstools that i find works the best (other than letting them do it themselves) is to cut with sterilized scissors a...

    Cleanup crew

I would say your caulerpa is fair game to clean up critters. The clean up critter to avoid if you want to preserve your macroalgae are emerald (mithrax) crabs. from my own experience anyway these guys really go to town on it.
