With no disrespect, it should not take a few weeks for a skimmer to function correctly unless its a new tank setup. Then it somewhat depends on what you have living in it (LR, LS, or fish) and how far along it is established.

did someone say poison-up? Any concoction that immediately changes water quality can not be good for a marine aquarium. If calcium is lacking it may be better to correct this slowly otherwise you may upset other water parameters. keep researching...

The Sundial can be used in a canopy. The Extreme or Pro cannot be used in a canopy. Choose wisely.

I've had two K3's for more than 6 months. They provide great circulation for the $. The only con I can think of is they are susceptible to breaking if you take them apart for maintenance after a period of time. At least, this was my experience the second time I cleaned them.

save yourself the loss of $70 and put it toward a better skimmer such as an AquaC.

You may want to check out the Aqua RemoraC for a protein skimmer. They cost a little bit more but personally I like the ease of maintenance and adjustment.

When looking for your new light fixture also keep in mind whether or not you have a canopy. There are several fixtures that are not compatible with canopies and you may not realize this until after you have purchased the fixture and read its manual.

Bad news for you if you are buying the Nova Extreme or Nova E Pro. They are not for use in canopies. For canopy use you will want the Current Sundial model.

astrea snails are nice. Not sure how big they get. Turbo's are great, however, if you have LR in your tank make sure its secure.
