How far can I go with $1000? (Reef Tank)

1000 can go far if you buy smart. First you'll need to research your purchases. You'll also want to join up with a local reef club and any others nearby. For instance with me there is a connecticut fish club, plus websites for manhattan reefers, and Boston Reefers. All 3 of those have...

    Test kits

For what it's worth you could probably skip the ammonia and nitrite test kits. From what I have seen Salifert is the prefered test kit, and seachem is a decent cheaper alternative. I have API and though I am a fan of their price, I am not a fan of distinguishing the minute differences in the...

The culligan man is my Hero!

wasnt a laugh at all.. was just trying to inform you that perhaps your estimates on how much a RODI system might be very off. Like I said, I got my 6 stage RODI system for 120 dollars. Now that you informed us about the screwdriver thing that perhaps explains the issue of why you would need...

The culligan man is my Hero!

bought my RODI unit off an auction site for 120 dollars.... No plumber was really needed, just a pin connection onto your water pipe and a line to the drain pipe. Or a cheap adapter to fit off of a faucet.

I Trimmed the Center Brace, now my tank's bowing!!

I had a similar situation a couple of months ago. I have a 72g bowfront that I broke the center brace while cleaning the tank out when I first got it. I didnt think anything of it and superglued it back together thinking that it basically was only there to hold the tops on. Well as I filled...

    72 gal bow front?

I have a 72gal bow as well. The stand is tapered on the sides so the size of the sump you can have in there is pretty much limited. The largest thing I could fit in there is a 29gal. I don't have too much experience with other size tanks but I am still trying to find a good way to aim my...

Bought some peppermint shrimp today keep you posted

I have a tank right now with no fish in it but a bunch of live rock with a lot of aptasia. I bought 3 peppermints to put them in and 2 of them disappeared, one of them died. I am not seeing any of the aptasia dead and it's been about 4 days or so and still havent seen the other peppermint...

    color blind hobbyists?

I was wondering about this with test kits. I have a really hard time figuring out what the actual readings are on my API test kits. I am not color blind (not that I know of) but even I have a hard time distinguishing tiny differences in the shade of a color. I could only imagine how hard it...

I forgot the wattage to gal ratio when geting a heater.

I am curious about heaters a bit as well. Are there heaters that are more efficient that can heat more water with less overall wattage? What makes expensive heaters good, and what makes cheap heaters bad? I am just having a hard time discerning the difference between Heater A and Heater B...

    Viniger to clean glass right?

Just curious. I know that windex or similar type cleaner is a no-no inside the tank and around stuff that come in contact with the water but what is wrong with using a windex sprayed paper towel to clean the outside of the tank with? It doesnt come in contact with any of the water so shouldnt...

I am not sure, but if you havent already added water to your sump what if you put some of that silicone down on the glass bottom and then put the pump on top of that to absorb the vibrations?

RO/DI system is shocking me, literally.

So, an update for those who care. I ended up calling an electrician. Luckily I got a very friendly and nice guy who didnt want to overcharge me. His company did though and they almost got 270 dollars to just tell me that my problem is most likely static electricity. He tested my water in...
