    mantis shrimp

probably not a good idea (but then again, i kept one with some damsels for more than a year with no problem): http://www.blueboard.com/mantis/ sooner or later, a smasher will start pounding away on the armored inverts though....

I got me a mantis shrimp

i would not suggest it. if you have a large smasher, it might sense you are a soft target and bury its very very sharp pointed dactyl in your hand. this will most likely become infected. divers have lost hands because of such resulting infection. all in all, it's not a good idea for handling...

I got me a mantis shrimp

in a series of experiments on competition, researchers (inc doc caldwell) found that smashers had by far the more potent weapon, and easily evicted spearers like Pseudosquilla ciliata from their cavities.

    How come?

well, consider that they never asked to be dropped into your tank, and that they only kill to feed themselves and remain alive (unlike human beings, who kill other animals and each other for just about any reason, including abstract concepts like religion and nationalism). if they are in your...

I went to the lfs to get a refractometer today

considering that peacocks are native to the pacific ocean, i don't think you'll get them from florida rock :) the cheapest peacock i got was a small one for $12...nowadays, they go for more like upper 20s to $60s (depending on the size, and more likely, depending on the store).

Do you want my killer shrimp, or should he go to shrimpy heaven

i think there are two inquiries in the other forums you posted to (reef, aggressive tank). if you leave it for a day or two, you will get more (in the 3 days i've been in this site, i know at least two other people posting here who want one, although one may want a large peacock mantis shrimp)...

Do you want my killer shrimp, or should he go to shrimpy heaven

you might wish to post in other forums here (aggressive setup, reef, i know HNK has been looking for one?), or the mantis shrimp forum in reefcentral.com....some people there are getting desperate.... many will gladly pay the shipping if they know it's a mantis.

    I want a mantis shrimp

glass is more brittle than plastic, which is probably why there are suggestions to use acrylic to house mantis shrimp. they are quite capable of breaking plastic as well, it seems. as i'm fond of noting, i once temporarily placed a 9 cm (5 inch) smasher (Gonodactylus chiragra) in a temporary...

    Aggression Test

it's funny how some people in this hobby get so worked up about the "evil" nature of mantis shrimps, who are simply feeding themselves , when these same "human beings" may derive so much pleasure from causing the needless death and suffering of other living things.

    I want a mantis shrimp

HNF2K: funny, but i'm that guy, and i've never visited his lab in my life :) ...and i'm not exactly an "expert".... ;) with regards to using glass tanks, it's quite rare for the mantis to break the glass (only if they are REALLY p*ssed off!), so this should be fine. btw, there are some new great...
