about the lobsters...spiny lobsters don't have claws and are less likely to be harmful to other fish, but still a good idea to get them last... i had one for quite sometime but lost it to the molting process.

thanks for the info folks. i put in 1.5'' pvc for the durso and it solved the problem. my bulkhead fittings are 1''. the 1.5'' is a tight fit in the overflow, but it works great! thanks again.

the bacterial infection on the eye could also be caused by flatworms, which was my horrible experience. also, ich is usually present in a dormant state in most tanks, being brought in on live rocks and in live sand, etc. fish become susceptible to 'ich' or cryptocaryon when they are stressed...

i have been advised against using the play sand due to the fact that it is much more likely to pack very densly. is this true? i have talked to quite a few aquaraists that say to stay away from it. otherwise, does it need to be rinsed before using?

is the point of a closed loop solely for circulation? i don't really see any other benefits, maybe i'm dumb where that's concerned, but i think a powerhead inside the tank would be more efficient, and certainly easy to work with, not to mention aesthetics.

heya folks, what in the H - E - double hockey sticks is a DURSO??? sounds like it's something to quiet water noise in overflow boxes??? i have a 180 true, FOWLR. it's pre-drilled and has overflow boxes in each corner. what do you do for a prefilter in that setup???

why not just use a powerhead that you place inside the tank if it will be used only for circulation???

i have no idea which iwaki pump it is, it was given to me with the setup, and i have no paperwork on it. pretty decent workhorse tho. pumps at least 17-1800 gph 0' head.

the difference is nominal, but noticeable. still WAY quieter than the old iwaki i have. glad i made the switch.

a good idea would be to turn the powerhead off before "prying" the poor guy from his apparently favorite rush. it seems that it might help from creating more damage. of course if you've already done this that's good. i just think simple sometimes.

splash, don't buy the 24!! the instructions that came with the 1800 say not to use less than 1 1/2'' plumbing for the output. this is very true, even tho the output fitting on the pump is 3/4'', the 1.5'' plumbing to the bulkead made a HUGE difference. i used only 1 T, and then 1.5'' flexible...

this link has great prices for mag drive pumps, and other pumps as well. a couple of my lfs's have had the same pumps with nearly a 100% markup. quite rediculous. i just purchased a mag drive 1800 gph, and i'm anxious to install to replace my old loud non-submersible. good luck...
