    55 reef to FOWLR

Yeah I figured I'd have to stay small with the 55. I've been contemplating getting a 120, the only problem with that is I have no place to put it. Well, the 55 is fine for now--I actually like the idea about getting two dwarf lions and a small puffer. Did you mean the clown (maroon?) in...

    55 reef to FOWLR

Hi guys, I'm going to be switching my 55 gal reef to FOWLR. Currently I have about a hundred pounds of LR, and 40 pounds of sand. The tanks been up for about 3 years. I was thinking of getting a snowflake moray, a dwarf lion, and . . . well actually I'm open to suggestions after that. Also...

    caught the sob moster!!!!!

I had a similar hitchhiker that killed my snowflake moray. I was very unhappy with the marauding crustacean. A friend let me throw him into his tank, which was home to a Queen Trigger. No more crab.

    Getting rid of cyanobacteria

I figured there was some chem that would do it, but I try to avoid using such unless I really have no other choice. Thanks for the info though.

    Getting rid of cyanobacteria

Jlem, you're very right about the RO/DI water, switched about a year ago to get rid of a diotom problem. Worked like a charm.

    Getting rid of cyanobacteria

Informative post, thanks 007. Bang guy, I don't actually feed my guys (bi-color blenny, yellow watchman, neon goby) enough that I can cut back on it (they eat so little that to cut back I'd have to stop feeding them altogether), but I will be putting in the refugium. Redirecting some current...

    Getting rid of cyanobacteria

Hi all. A few weeks ago I finally switched from cc to sand (well worth it, but what a pain). My livestock did not seem affected by the change, everything was going pretty well. Recently however a outbreak of cyanobacteria has begun covering my substrate. My levels are all still where they...

    Coralline algea dying

Yeah its Oceanic, I'm not sure what I was thinking of. He started using it this past week, he says it does in fact dissolve very rapidly. I saw some of the stuff at a local LFS, and I have to admit its very tempting at just under $40 for a 200 gallon bucket. Anyway, he doesn't have that much...

    Coralline algea dying

Hi all, I'm writing on behalf of a friend with a 30 gal reef tank. Recently his coralline algea has started dying en masse. I also noticed a lack of tube worms. Nothing else seems to be affected though, corals are doing fine, so is his cleaning crew, a bubble anemone, and his Ocellaris. His...

    Lighting

Just some info: Its a 55 gallon tank, running a ps/2 protein skimmer, 3 power (heads about 700 gal/h between them), and a fluval 404. Residents are 20 turbos, 5 scarlett hermits, 2 sally light foots, one bi-color blenny, and a hippo tang (I'm told I'll probably have to remove him eventually...

    Lighting

The tank is just under 2 years old. I converted from an FOWLR setup at the start of the summer. At that time I had about 50 lbs of LR. The first thing I did to convert was get an RO/DI unit and about 40 more lbs of LR. Then in August I upgraded the lighting to a 260 watt PC, shortly...

    Lighting

I recently had a pretty severe diatom problem. I tried various methods to alleviate it but the only thing that really worked was turning off my 10K bulbs (2x65 watt) and using just my actinic (2x65 watt). The diatoms have completely cleared up, and I had a massive influx of coraline algea. I...

New with Corals .... Need Advice

That's pretty low wattage for a 120. The advice I was given for the easy stuff is to run about 4 watts per gallon.

    !!An important question about powerheads

I've been running a marineland for about 6 months, pretty happy with it. The suction cup that came with it wasn't strong enough to hold it up, but I worked around that.

what kind of crab is this?

I actually had that exact same hitchhiker. He killed my snowflake (little guy). Gave it a good gash right behind the head that it never recovered from, died about a week later despite my best efforts. Crab went out of my tank, into a full grown queen trigger's tank. I'm vengeful.

    water change

You really should do frequent partial water changes. Basically mix the saltwater in a bin, using a powerhead. I usually do this a couple days in advance of the water change. Use a heater to keep the water the same temp as the water in your tank (to reduce stress). Its best to use RO/DI water...

    powerheads

Hi guys, So after a year and a half I have finally transitioned from FOWLR to reef. I'm pretty much ready for my first coral (I think). Setup: 55 gal tank 260 watt PC (1/2 actinic, 1/2 superdaylight) ~90 lbs LR protein skimmer fluval 404 5 scarlett hermits 20 turbo snails 1 coral banded...

    Blue leg VS. Scarlets

this is sort of related: how many blue legs would you guys put into a 55 gal? also is it necessary to give them algea sheets, or do they get enough food from foraging?

    Horseshoe Crab

very neat though, something like 300 million years old. one of those speices that didn't need evolution--got it right the first time. :) i hear they're actually more closely related to arachnids than crustaceans.
