A local water quality store told me that Hardness of my tap water times 17 will tell me about the TDS. Is this true? My Hardness is 23. So 23 x 17 = 391 is this good or bad?

Call me stupid but I have yet to learn how a refuge works or what they add to the tank. I know that you can use them for Macro's or Pod's but what does that mean. Also what ratio do they need to be in comparison with your tank. What all goes into a Refuge?
