    Cleaning Protein skimmers

I have a bottle brush that I use on mine and once or twice a year I'll run some vinegar water through it in the sink to get the stuff the brush misses.

    Temperature settings for reef....

I keep mine at 82 as well. It may creep a little higher if t's a hot day and the AC isn't on. But if it gets hot enough to drive the tank up to where I would be concerned, it's usually too hot for me as well. For some reason, I seem to have a need to heat my tank as opposed to chill it. No...

    Maroon Clown Question.,,

Jwtrojan is right, if you want to pair them up on your own, you can. It just takes a time and patience. Make sure that one is larger than the other and allow them to see one another without actually being able to get at each other. Such as a tank divider, in-tank refugium, critter cage...

Why close this? No one is flaming and everone is staying civil. This is topic that should be addressed. Obviously a member felt strongly enough about it to stick his neck out for the axe. I commend him for it. No, we aren't all perfect. Yes, we are all human. But the moderators, if they...

No yellow tang in a 55g???

I have to agree with LeBouef. If you buy them small with the understanding that they will have to be traded in a few years down the road, and provide plenty of swimming room, I don't see a problem. I've had them in my 58g with no problem. I've found the Yellow Tangs to be quite slow growing...

    Help Please

I'm going to have to troll the opinions of some others here....Justin?....Krux?...others? Isn't 2 watts/gallon a little on the low side? I saw in the first post that he has 110 PC and 40w Actinic. Isn't this a little low for that large of a tank? And couldn't that be contributing to the problem?

I thought that looked like crushed coral substrate too. I looked in the listing and didn't see crushed coral, so figured it was my eyes or a blurry picture. I would have to echo getting rid of the CC in favor of sand.

    Propagating yellow leather

I propogated my leather many times by just clipping one of the small 'lobes' off and sticking it down in a crevice of rock where I wanted it. After a week or so the clipping will adhere and begin to grow.

What kind of food are you feeding to the livestock you have and how often? Also are there any types of additives that you dose and if so what, how much and how often? Also, what kind of water did you use to fill the tank? Tap or Reverse Osmosis? Something is obviously causing the algae bloom...

I do believe the mods should be held to a higher standard. They have been appointed as representatives of the operators of this board and any behavior of theirs, good or bad, is a reflection of the board and Saltwaterfish.com, whether this board is actually a division of SWF or not. I have seen...

    Ophiura, Need Your Advice!

Thank you for your reply. There have been no new drop-offs since Friday. His activity yesterday was rather depressed, but today he was back to hunting and foraging, then picked out a crevice for the day. I still have not seen anyone pick on him, not even the shrimp. At this point my hopes are...

    Ophiura, Need Your Advice!

Susan- I have a red serpent star that I special ordered from my lfs. I picked him up on Wed. 6-11-03. That was the same day he came in and I was hoping they would just leave him in the bag, but he was already in their tank by the time I got there. I brought him home and did a temp acclimation...

    The Basics of Aiptasia

Beth- Going to have to agree with Tim here. From the appearance in the picture I would agree that it is Aiptasia. I had one like that too. It didn't move as yours has done though. It was also reproduction free for about year, then 'boom' all over the place. I don't know if they have to...

    Refractometer calibration

Refractometers are supposed to be calibrated with distilled because they need the 'purest' water possible in order to be accurate. RO is pretty good as far as being impurity-free, but distilled would be better. Refractometers are used to measure all kinds of things. I used to use them to...
