I can understand how some can feel that maybe he should have quit what he was doing and got a desk job.........
But as a son, I would not have ever wanted my parents to have 'not' done something that they enjoied doing just because of me......I am sure his family is proud of him....
Thanks for the laughs and bringing me things in the world that I may have never seen without ya Steve

Do you say this, as Beth mentioned, to fire fighters? Police officers? Soldiers?
You are at more of a risk of dying in a car accident then handling poisonous snakes and dangerous animals?? No, you are not. He died to a stingray.. THAT is odd.. but he tempted his fate far too many times.
Yes, I think a firefighter/police officer/soldier who has a wife and kids needs to choose a different profession. Without a doubt.. maybe im the only responsible person in this world. I have many passions but you know what? If a wife and a kid come along im giving up everything I love for them because they are my new passion.
Anyways this is my opinion. You're free to yours as I am free to mine, enjoy. <3

He was Careless way to often. He would not just hold poisoness snakes he would put them right up to his face. He did some real Stupid stuff that went past the boundaries of Sanity. I remember one episode where he is chasing this Green poisoness snake all through the brush and even climbed trees trying to catch it he was completely careless and almost got bit. He taught people a lot not to have a healthy fear of nature. To compare what he did to that of a firemen and police is really out their. Other than the times that he would go into a house to capture a snake there is no comparison. I would not be surprised if he was petting the sting ray. I think there is more to the story.
On the flip side it was fun to watch a lot of what he did and it is sad that his family had to loose him.

How about where he holds his child while feeding a crocodile? JUST WHAT IF the croc pushed forward at his legs and knocked him over.. he stumbled the baby and the crocodile..... well... you can use your imagination... thats pretty f'ed up.. I dont feel sorry for him. I feel sorry for his wife and kids.

can we let the poor guy rest in peace?? I have watched his shows since they started. My little guy was/is an avid fan. He did NOT teach us to be careless around snakes/reptiles. He always reminded all of us about his knowledge about these creatures.
This was a FREAK accident. It could have happened to any ONE of us. It could have happend to me or my kids a few weeks ago as I snorkled around many rays. I learned the sting ray shuffle as a kid. My kids have learned it. I had the misforturne as a child to get stung by one of these creatures. We now know a strike in the chest area would be our "achilles tendond".
Rest in peace Steve and many thoughts and prayers for the strength of your wife and children.................

Hello,
I dont want to step on any toes, but I think its wrong to criticize the man when he is no longer with us. I thought he was quite a personality. If more people were into animals and wildlife as much as he was then there wouldnt be such a long extinction list. Everyone is entitled to their opinion its just seems wrong to talk ill of him. I was sadden by the news and I feel ever so bad for his family.

R.I.P. Steve Irwin

Why do you people feel the need to bash the dead. Show some respect. Why do you feel the need put this guy down.
I know exactly what his family is going through. My step-mother killed my dad when I was 15. Steve Irwin was a good man and I am glad he did the things he did. He believed in his work and didn't worry about what others thought about it.
Oh, and if every firefighter and police officer quit when they got married or had kids, we wouldn't have many people to do these jobs.
What about the military? Should every potential soldier that plans to get married and start a family not even join? Should the soldiers resign when they have a chance if they have or plan to start a family?
Speg, you are definately entitled to your opinion, but in my opinion it is ridiculous.

This guy has fans, and he has people who really don't like him. Its definitely true.
It would be nice that at this point, everyone give the guy a real rest.
People are assuming he messed with this animal in some way. Well, got news for you....touch tanks with stingrays are very very very common at aquaria. And "swimming" with stingrays is very common. Fatal hits are very rare. People "mess" with stingrays all the time and don't die. Go look at any special on marine life and you will probably see some image of a ray swimming along, in a scene very much like it sounds like they were shooting. Very common view. Very uncommon end.
He wasn't hit on the legs because he wasn't walking. He was swimming, which means you are in a horizontal position, which means that you are no more likely to be hit in the legs than in the chest. It doesn't by definition mean he was messing with it.
Heck, for those who don't like him, he could have been killed in a car accident in the outback and people would be blaming him for taking risk in some way because he was out filming something. He could have died from an allergic reaction to an animal and would have been blamed for something by someone. He could have been shot by someone and people would find a way to blame him.
Yeah, holding his kid in there? Stupid. I agree. I've done stupid things too. I've been too comfortable around some animals and got away with it. People get too comfortable walking on their roof cleaning the gutters or putting up Christmas lights, and get away with it. But every so often there is a tragedy. To each their own.
But it didn't cause him to die. He didn't deserve to die. But it may have been his time in the end. And if it was, he could have been watching the TV....
I hope he just has peace knowing he made a difference. I really believe he did.

Ophiura, his death was filmed and has been reviewed by numerous people. they said that he was swimming above and to the side of the ray, not bothering it at all, when is suddenly flung up it's tail and bolted.
they said that on that reef during this time of year, rays are under constant attack from tiger sharks, so the ray was probably already on the defensive to begin with and felt that it was under attack since Irwin was on one side of it and the camera man was swimming in front of it.
just a freak thing and a shame. you can like him or not, but he's been pretty much the "voice" of wildlife for the past several years. it really is a sad thing.
I really didn't feel sorry at all for the "grizzly man" that was basically a deranged hippy that didn't know what he was doing living among bears (and paid with his life), but Irwin was not the grizzly man. Irwin knew his stuff (even though he seemed to be a goofball) and was passionate about what he was doing.

Yup, that is what I have heard. But many continue to say he must have been doing something. There is an uncertainty that you have to take into account when dealing with wild animals...but in the end they are still unknowns, and he paid the price. If we could talk to him right now, I don't think he would blame that stingray. That to me shows the depth of his passion for these animals

Animal Planet (which will not be the same) is showing things now...
One thing Irwin knew was that these were wild animals, with wild instincts...and were worth saving even so. The "Grizzly Man" confused this issue. He believed that they were nice happy animals, not wild and driven by basic instincts.

I really find it hard to understand the turn of this topic. The guy just died and people are trying to decide if it was his fault or not.
Just plain wrong. Just plain cold. Go figure.

I have always been a huge croc hunter fan. I freaked out when my dear sweet Robin Meade from CNN broke the news to me this morning. He will be greatly missed. He left behind a powerful legacy and my heart goes out to his family.
