10 gal Nano - Start

My 10 gal has been going for about 2 weeks. Bought 2 small pieces of live rock today and placed it on top of some base rock. I'll slowly be adding more. What do you guys think?

it's a little early for a fish....you should also look into a powerhead for more water circulation. DO you have test kits?

I had a 55 gal for a little over 4 years and did the same then to help cycle the tank. Some people here think its horrible to cycle with fish, but these guys are pretty hardy. I have a powerhead in a box somewhere. I'm going to dig for it this weekend. If not I will just go and buy a new one. I ussually test my water at the LFS, but not might be a bad idea to buy a test kit!!

ya i did the same thing....added 3 blue-green chromis after 2 weeks...needless to say only one survived and my hermits got a nice dinner! Perhaps the large hermits just got the fish when they were sleepin who knows in this hobby!
I dont see much for sand? WTH? No sand critters for u?
+1 get some flow and more rock!
I just had a lil 10gal not to long ago. Tank looked great when stocked with rock, coral, and 2 fish!
My high end LFS has purple chromis! O man I want em but dont have any room LOL!
Welcome to the site!

Btw i cycled my tank that way because i was really green to the hobby and didnt know any other way of cycling....ur fish will be exposed to high anmonia and nitrate and such...i wouldnt wanna be locked in a room full of anmonia myself!
Wat kind of water r u usin?

Any updates? I am curious to know if that snail made it. The point meowzer was trying to make is that we know that you can cycle with chromis' and damsels but it is cruel and often times doesn't turn out well for the animal. There are better ways to cycle the tank that will not cost the animals their lives or suffering in a non-cycled tank. I would recommend a small power head and more sand but that is just me. It is all about personal preference and most of the folks on SWF have the best intentions when giving advice so don't take it personal.

1guyDude - Although I know how beneficial a deeper sand bed is, I like the look of not having too much sand. I am going to add a bit more but want to keep it under 1" deep. I added a powerhead yesterday

I totally understand meowzer's point, and know all your intentions are good. That being said in the future I will be more patient and cycle the tank a different way. Like said I added a powerhead yesterday and will be buying more live rock next weekend. Here is a pic froma few minutes ago!

Sounds good man. The sand bed thing is personal preference as long as you have an adequate amount of rock and it seems like you plan on getting more so it shouldn't matter. Other than that what are your plans for the tank? FOWLR? Or nano reef?

standard light fixtures! Kinda nice they screw into E26 and E27 sockets i believe.....u could use a terranium light that go for like $15! U know the ones that look like grow lights and clamp on!

Updates...I added more live rock and after testing my water at the lfs water conditions are prefect. I added a black african clown.

Google “nitrification cycle” and “new tank syndrome” and then buy Hagen Cycle product, 2-3 days you are done, or wait 30 days, either case the biological filter can only handle “current” load and increases in load are intended to be tapered.
