I honestly believe with a ten gallon aquarium you can make a very beautiful mini reef. I think You could get twenty to sixty pounds of live rock, get decent lighting, get great corals and anenomes and a clownfish. As for fish you won't be able to get too much but a tomato clown or something like that would do justice.

We have a 10 gallon hawk tank. It's a spotted hawkfish. Some LR, maybe 4lbs. Some blade algae, a few aptasia and actually some pulsing xenia just for grins. At that under 2 15watt NOs, one actinic one 10k. Fun little tank that gets a 2 gallon water change every other week. It's actually my wife's tank but other than feed, she doesn't do anything with it.
I think 10 gallon tanks can be cool as long as you're careful with stocking and do the water changes.
Let us know what you do.
Here's the hawk in his 10 gallon home.

I used to keep my pair of false percs in a 10 and they did realy well in there(0 nitrates.) I think little 10 gallon tanks are so cool and they arent as hard to keep as a lot of people say. My clowns are now in the 30 gallon. I would say your alright with 2 small slow swimming fish in a 10, you may be able to keep 3 if your tank is well established. :D

I have a 10 gallon with a 5.5 gallon refugium. Inhabitants consist of two firefish, a peppermint shrimp and several snails and 4 hermits. The tank is very stable with the refuge, although i left this past weekend and had a huge phyto outbreak for no reason at all that I am fighting right now. But here is a link to the setup and some current pics of the tank. It has been up since feb 14.

Here's a few month old pic of my 10 gallon... Search for "kitchen nano" and you'll get a thread on it where I tell about it... Possibilities are endless... I'm happy to answer specifics as always...

Because of the size of my tank, it's not too pricey (in reef tank standards at least). Livestock wise a lot of the corals were frags obtained free from club members. The most expensive livestock has been the clams as you can't frag them :D If you want to keep sps in a 10 you could do it, but you should definately be an experienced reefer. I'll go on and on... feel free to ask specifics ;) good luck and keep us updated!

Before anything Theone I would ask you your reef experience. If you are a newbie going with a 10 gallon reef I usually wouldn't recommend it, unless you are VERY well studied and patient. I would love to help, but a general question of "could you help me pick all the things I need?" would require me to hijack this thread and almost write a book!:D Are you an experienced reefer? If not, you should do plenty of research before starting your tank. I recommend a larger tank, around 30 to 55 gallons to start, and the cost between that and a 10 is not much different. A lot of the dry goods are available right here at SWF.com, your local fish store, or about 5 million on line places! Good luck!

While there are "simple" setups in saltwater, the owners still have to know what is going on in the tank, which is somewhat complicated and requires a little research. If you are willing to do this you'd be able to keep a clown or two in a ten gallon (although I think tomatoes get a little large, look into ocellaris or percula). You can't just put "sand and rock and plants" and expect success, especially in a 10 gallon. Study up and develop a plan before you dive in. Hope that helps...

ooops, i wasn't really thinking about relative size to the tank. I was just throwing out numbers. I just think that u can stock a ten gallon really nicely and make it into a beautiful reef.
